The Department of Immunology, Genetics and Pathology at Uppsala University has a broad research profile with strong research groups focused on, among other things, cancer, genetic and autoimmune diseases. A key principle at the department is to stimulate translational research and thereby promote closer collaboration between medical research and healthcare. Research is conducted within six research programs: cancer precision medicine, cancer immunotherapy, genomics and neurobiology, molecular tools and functional genomics, neuro-oncology and neurodegeneration, and vascular biology. Parts of the operations are also integrated with the departments of oncology, clinical genetics, clinical immunology, clinical pathology, and hospital physics at Uppsala University Hospital. You will be part of the course administration, which is responsible for undergraduate education within several degree programs as well as the department's international master's program. The work is independent but takes place in close collaboration with the Deputy Head of Undergraduate Education, Course Director, Course Coordinators, and Program Directors.

Responsibilities

As a Research Engineer, you will play a central role in the planning, development, coordination, and implementation of laboratory components within all of the department's educational programs. The work is carried out in close collaboration with course coordinators, teachers, teaching assistants, and course administration.

The responsibilities include developing and updating laboratory exercises, as well as associated instructions, compendiums, protocols, and teaching materials. You are responsible for implementing new or revised laboratory components in courses and producing demonstration and backup data for teaching. The role also involves identifying suitable teaching assignments for IGP doctoral students based on their background and competence, and drawing up and documenting individual teaching plans (TE plans) for compilation and reporting to HR and finance.

You coordinate the laboratory components before and during course implementation. This includes, among other things, planning laboratory sessions, booking laboratories and equipment, ordering reagents and consumables, preparing samples and laboratory materials, and ensuring quality assurance of the laboratory work. You also serve as a support to course coordinators and supervise teaching assistants in the planning and implementation of laboratory sessions, assisting in the assessment of laboratory reports and other examination components.

The responsibilities also include administering teaching materials in digital learning platforms, compiling examination data, handling attendance reporting, and contributing to the continuous development and quality assurance of the department's laboratory teaching. You are also responsible for the maintenance and organization of the teaching laboratory's equipment, instruments, and chemicals, as well as conducting risk assessments prior to laboratory sessions.

The laboratory sessions cover molecular genetic and molecular biological methods such as DNA extraction, real-time PCR, SNP genotyping, methylation analysis, Sanger sequencing, fragment analysis, and next-generation sequencing (NGS).

The work involves continuously keeping up to date with developments in the molecular biological methods used in teaching, as well as research developments in relevant areas.

Qualifications

A university degree in molecular biology, biomedicine, biotechnology, or another related natural science field. Documented experience with molecular biological laboratory methods. Experience working with DNA-based analyses such as PCR, real-time PCR, and sequencing. Good ability to plan, organize, and coordinate tasks. Good communication skills and experience working in collaboration with teachers, students, and technical staff. Good proficiency in Swedish and English, both spoken and written.

Desirable/Additional Merits

Experience coordinating teaching, scheduling, or educational administration within higher education. Experience with laboratory teaching in higher education. Experience with molecular genetic analysis methods in forensic science. Experience with NGS, SNP genotyping, methylation analysis, Sanger sequencing, and fragment analysis. Experience working in digital learning platforms, such as Studium, and administrative systems for education. Experience with laboratory organization, instrument responsibility, and chemical management.

Great importance will be attached to personal suitability. The applicant should be structured, have good collaboration skills, be service-oriented, and able to work independently, while the role requires a high degree of coordination ability and flexibility.
