Are you curious about how new technology, such as artificial intelligence (AI), can be used to develop communication in a safe, ethical, and effective way? Do you have both strategic thinking and technical understanding of how websites and social media are best used? Then you might be the one we are looking for.

The Nordic Africa Institute (NAI) is seeking a communicator responsible for the institute's internal and external websites as well as social media, with the task of developing forms of storytelling in various digital environments together with others.

The position is a permanent employment with a six-month probationary period. We offer an stimulating work environment in Uppsala, the possibility of partial remote work, and good benefits.

About Us

NAI is a Swedish government agency under the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, funded by the governments of Finland, Iceland, Denmark, and Sweden. The institute's mission is to deepen the understanding of contemporary African perspectives among Nordic policymakers and other societal actors. We conduct research and collaborate with partner institutions in the Nordic countries and Africa. The institute has approximately 35 employees from nearly 20 countries.

The Communication and Policy Engagement unit at NAI produces articles, films, infographics, policy notes, and other publications; manages websites and social media; arranges events and policy briefings; and holds workshops on research communication. We work closely with researchers in shaping our research communication.

About the Position

You are responsible for ensuring that NAI's digital channels – websites and social media – are accessible, secure, and effective tools for spreading research-based knowledge to policymakers, media, and other societal actors. You develop strategies for content, analysis, and user experience, and contribute to strengthening the institute's digital presence and impact. You coordinate and are responsible for publishing in our digital channels.

An important part of the role is to follow developments within AI and digital communication, and drive the development of how we use existing and new tools in a safe, responsible, and creative manner in line with NAI's mission.

Experience with research communication or translating scientific knowledge to broader audiences is considered an asset.

Examples of Tasks

  • Responsible for the development and management of NAI's websites, including technical functionality, analysis, and operations.
  • Drive and develop NAI's social media channels and contribute to cohesive digital communication.
  • Follow developments within AI and digital communication and provide advice on the safe, ethical, and effective use of new tools.
  • Ensure that web and digital communication comply with applicable laws and standards, such as GDPR, the DOS Act, and WCAG, as well as guidelines for information security in the public sector.
  • Collaborate with internal and external parties, such as researchers, web developers, and suppliers.
  • Contribute to the development of NAI's overall communication work and digital strategy.
  • Support colleagues during events and special communication initiatives.

Qualifications

Requirements:

  • University education in communication or equivalent.
  • At least five years of documented experience in web management, social media, and analysis of digital communication.
  • Good knowledge of laws and standards related to digital communication, such as GDPR, the DOS Act, and web accessibility (WCAG).
  • Experience with web analytics, SEO, and UX design.
  • Experience in analyzing and evaluating social media reach and audience engagement.
  • Understanding of AI tools and their use in communication, with a focus on ethics, security, and efficiency.
  • Very good proficiency in Swedish and English.
  • Good analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability and interest in collaborating in an international and multicultural work environment.
