Stockholm Diocese is seeking a Building Archaeologist for the Project Care and Maintenance Plans

Do you want to contribute to maintaining and preserving an invaluable cultural heritage, develop your knowledge of cultural-historical valuation and selection, or perhaps building conservation? As a project-employed building archaeologist, you will join a group of experienced church archaeologists and a building engineer at Stockholm Diocese.

ABOUT STOCKHOLM DIOCESE AND THE DIOCESAN SECRETARIAT

Stockholm Diocese extends from Össeby in the north to Botkyrka in the south, and from Djurö-Möja-Nämdö in the east to Adelsö-Munsö in the west. The diocese was formed in 1942 and is the youngest but also the largest in terms of membership among the Church of Sweden's thirteen dioceses.

The Stockholm Diocesan Secretariat has approximately 65 employees who together carry out a broad and meaningful mission: to promote and exercise oversight over the diocese's parishes and pastorates. The secretariat works with support linked to the parishes' basic tasks – worship, education, diaconia, and mission – as well as leadership, properties, economy, law, and sustainability. The Diocesan Secretariat is organized into five units and is led by a Diocesan Director, in close cooperation with the Bishop. The Secretariat's offices are activity-based and are located in the newly renovated Sankt Jacobsgården next to Kungsträdgården in central Stockholm.

As an employee of the Church of Sweden, you will work in a flat organization where collaboration, knowledge sharing, and competence development permeate the operations.

All work is based on our core values: The Parish in Focus – Strength Lies in the Group – Active Employee Participation. We use digital tools, digitized work materials, and work and collaborate in Microsoft 365.

ABOUT THE POSITION

The Church of Sweden has initiated an exciting and challenging change process to ensure good and sustainable management of church buildings and other property holdings for the future. As a building archaeologist, you will be part of a project group within the unit for property, cultural heritage, and clergy salary resources. The project aims to support parishes and pastorates in Stockholm Diocese in preparing care programs and maintenance plans for both cultural environment act-protected church buildings and churchyards, as well as other structures. We work according to our own valuation model based on the National Heritage Board's model for valuation and selection, developed to create value for church councils and administrators.

In the role of building archaeologist, you will provide archaeological expertise in the development of the management of church cultural heritage. To thrive, you need to want to work in an organization based on Christian faith, trust, and societal engagement.

WHO ARE WE LOOKING FOR?

We are looking for you who are a communicative team player with strong inner drive and who wish to be part of a work group characterized by competence and joy in work. We want you to have:

  • Building or settlement archaeological education or equivalent
  • Good knowledge of and experience in conducting cultural-historical analysis
  • Good knowledge of building conservation and archaeological materials and methods
  • Good ability to express yourself in Swedish, both orally and in writing
  • Ability to concisely and pedagogically formulate knowledge values and experiential values, as well as to formulate archaeological requirements and guidelines in a care program
  • Good collaboration skills
  • Good ability to work systematically and deliver according to schedule
  • Ability to independently search for historical information, drawings, etc., in various archives and digitally
  • Experience in photographing and editing images, working in InDesign, and in the Office suite

Stockholm Diocese welcomes and values diversity and strives for gender balance. We work actively with leadership, employee participation, working environment, and well-being. Employees are offered, among other things, subsidized lunch and fitness benefits. It is possible to work partially remotely when the tasks allow.

We welcome your application!
