Department of Forest Genetics and Plant Physiology
The Department of Forest Genetics and Plant Physiology is part of the Umeå Plant Science Centre (UPSC, https://www.upsc.se/ (https://www.upsc.se/)), a competence centre for experimental plant research and forest biotechnology in northern Sweden. UPSC strives to conduct excellent and innovative basic research and generate knowledge beneficial for forestry, agriculture, the environment, and society. We study plants from the cellular level up to ecophysiology, as well as from basic research to industrial applications. We aim to understand plants' ability to grow, adapt, and acclimatize to a changing world, knowledge that can lead to better plant varieties, cultivation practices, or industrial processes.
About the Job
The technician is expected to process tree core samples collected within the ERC-STG project “TREE-RING GENOMICS” for the generation of ring-width data. This includes sample handling, preparation of tree cores, image capture, and quality control. Additional tasks related to sample collection may occur as needed.
- Preparation of wood samples using a microtome
- Handling of wood samples (storage of physical samples as well as digital images and metadata in a PostgreSQL database)
- Quality control (QC) of wood samples
- Work with a microscope platform with a motorized stage
- Quality control of sample images using Zen software
- Pre-processing of digital images using proprietary software
- Work with computing clusters (running scripts for sample processing)
- Handling of field equipment
Your Background
The applicant should have experience in preparing tree cores, microscopy, PostgreSQL databases, and digital image processing. Very good knowledge of English, both spoken and written, is required.
