The Swedish Coast Guard is a civilian state authority that monitors Sweden's coastline and large lakes around the clock. With our maritime capabilities, we are a central operational actor in the maritime environment. We have a unique mission within total defense, carrying out tasks within both civil defense and, under certain conditions, military defense. Our mission includes sea surveillance, maintaining order, crime prevention, and environmental readiness at sea. By continuously collecting and sharing sea information with other authorities, we create a civil sea situation picture that is crucial for both crisis preparedness and security in the maritime environment.
Our ships and aircraft constantly conduct sea surveillance, and we can act quickly in the face of threats of criminality, emergencies, accidents, or threats to maritime safety. The Swedish Coast Guard combines this surveillance with readiness for rescue and environmental rescue services at sea. This strengthens society's ability to prevent incidents and, if something happens, to handle and restore order and security in the maritime environment.
Description
The Swedish Coast Guard is an authority undergoing ongoing transformation. The deteriorating security situation in Sweden's vicinity, the high terror threat, and the impact of organized crime on our society are all areas affecting the Coast Guard's mission and operations.
The Intelligence Unit is a newly formed unit under the Swedish Coast Guard's operational department. From March 1, 2026, the Swedish Coast Guard has been granted expanded powers to conduct intelligence activities in the maritime environment. This means that the Intelligence Unit is currently undergoing an exciting transformation journey to meet new opportunities while addressing the deteriorating security situation. The Coast Guard's Intelligence Unit will be developed and expanded in accordance with the need to meet the challenges in our surroundings.
The work of the Intelligence Unit will focus on developing the ability to understand the need for sea situation information/pictures from other authorities and the Government Offices. A large part of the mission will involve collaboration with others and understanding holistic solutions to problem areas for Sweden.
