Researcher in English with a Linguistic Orientation
The Department of English comprises five specializations in both teaching and research: English linguistics, English literature, American literature, Irish, and the Swedish Institute for North American Studies (SINAS). Research is conducted within all these areas. We are now seeking a researcher in English with a linguistic orientation.
Responsibilities
This position aims to develop new research within English linguistics. We welcome research ideas within any subject area of English linguistics, including cross-disciplinary and multi-disciplinary research.
A goal of the position should be to generate concrete research-initiating activities, such as applying for research grants and/or creating research networks.
The position covers 100% working time for 6 months. The main task is research. Some administrative duties may be added.
As the holder of the researcher position, you are expected to participate in the Department of English's regular activities on-site in Uppsala. This includes participation in regular meetings and seminars at the workplace.
Qualifications
Eligible for appointment as a researcher in English with a linguistic orientation is someone who has completed a relevant doctoral degree in a humanities or social science subject, and whose planned research lies within English linguistics.
Prioritization will be given to applicants who have completed their doctoral degree no more than five years before the application deadline. Very good knowledge of English is a requirement for the position.
Evaluation criteria for applicants meeting the qualification requirements:
In the selection among qualified applicants, special weight will be attached to scientific merits and the quality of the research plan. In assessing the research plan, attention will be paid to the scientific potential, originality, relevance, and feasibility of the research project. The project's relation to the department's research environment will be given importance.
Since the position aims to initiate new research, the scientific merits in the application will be assessed primarily in qualitative terms. A quantitative advantage for an applicant, which may be explained by having been active for a longer period, should not be decisive.
All merits must be well documented so that both scope and quality can be assessed.
Period of Employment
The period of employment is from August 1, 2026, to January 31, 2027.
Application Procedure:
The application should be written in Swedish or English, submitted via Uppsala University's electronic recruitment system Varbi, and include the following:
- Cover letter (max. 1 page)
- CV (max. 3 pages)
- List of publications
- Description of research idea, including plan for the work's implementation (max. 3 pages)
- Scientific and pedagogical works cited (max. 3)
- Degree certificates, certificates, and other relevant documents
- The recruitment group may use interviews and references. Applicants must therefore submit a list of references (maximum three) that can illuminate the applicant's professional competence and personal qualities relevant to the position.
Any cited publications not available in electronic format should be sent in two copies to Uppsala University, Faculty of Humanities, Box 256, 751 05 Uppsala. Mark the correspondence with ref. UFV-PA 2026/1927.
Information about the position can be obtained from Christer Larsson (Head of Department), [email protected], or Erik Smitterberg (Professor of English Linguistics), [email protected].
