Do you want to work with finance, supported by competent and friendly colleagues in an international environment? Do you want an employer that invests in sustainable employee well-being and offers secure, advantageous working conditions? We welcome you to apply for the position of Economist at Uppsala University.

The Department of Cell and Molecular Biology (ICM) is divided into seven research programs, all focusing on different areas within cell and molecular biology: computational biology and bioinformatics, microbiology and immunology, molecular biology, molecular biophysics, molecular evolution, molecular systems biology, and structural biology. The scientific basis for what we do lies in biology, but our research overlaps with other fields such as medicine, computer science, mathematics, chemistry, engineering, and physics. The department has over 200 employees and around 50 doctoral students. An important part of the bioinformatics environment at ICM is the National Bioinformatics Infrastructure Sweden (NBIS), a national research infrastructure that offers expert support, analysis resources, and advanced training in bioinformatics. NBIS has ICM as its host institution. NBIS is the bioinformatics platform at SciLifeLab and also serves as the Swedish node in the European infrastructure ELIXIR. Read more about the department's activities at https://icm.uu.se (https://icm.uu.se) and about NBIS at https://nbis.se (https://nbis.se).

We are now looking for an Economist who will become part of ICM's administrative operations, which currently consists of 10 employees. In this role, you will independently be responsible for financial work within one or more of the department's research programs, as well as parts of the financial work within the national research infrastructure NBIS. Together with the department's other economists, you will contribute to the overall financial work and ensure qualified, operationally relevant financial support.

Responsibilities

As an Economist at ICM, you work with ongoing financial matters and are responsible for both qualified and routine tasks within the financial area. The role includes, among other things, financial statement and accounting controls, preparing financial decision-making materials, and processing, monitoring, and closing internal and external projects. You are independently responsible for budgeting, financial reporting, and ongoing monitoring and analysis, and provide financial support to research group leaders and funders. Handling of assets as well as customer and supplier invoices is also part of the responsibilities.

The department has several successful research groups with large external grants, including from the EU, which means the work is often characterized by complex and developing financial issues. The work is carried out in close collaboration with program directors, professors, researchers, and the department's support functions, as well as other economists and administrative staff.

Qualifications

We are looking for you who:

  • Have at least an academic bachelor's degree in business administration or other education that the employer considers equivalent
  • Have documented experience working with financial matters in line with the responsibilities described above
  • Have experience working in financial systems, such as Raindance
  • Have experience working in payroll administration systems, such as Primula
  • Have very good skills in Excel as well as good computer literacy and experience with common office programs for text and presentation, such as Word and PowerPoint
  • Have very good ability to express yourself in Swedish and English, both orally and in writing, as the work takes place in an international environment

Great importance will be attached to personal suitability. To succeed in the role, we see that you are service-oriented, communicative, and have a professional and solution-oriented approach. You thrive in a role with many contacts and find it easy to collaborate with both researchers and administrative colleagues. At the same time, you are self-reliant, responsible, and structured, with good ability to plan, prioritize, and adapt your work to the needs of the operation. You contribute with commitment, flexibility, and a genuine interest in supporting research and education through qualified financial work.

Desirable/Additional qualifications

  • Experience of finance within public sector operations, particularly within universities or higher education
  • Experience of project reporting
  • Experience of processing EU projects or similar assignments
  • Experience of working in the systems Prisma and EU Participant Portal
