to apply for the job

We are looking for an engaged developer/data scientist for our data lab, an innovation hub that develops smart AI solutions for our employees, other authorities, and the general public.

Your responsibilities

You will work in a small, agile team with cross-disciplinary competencies, developing AI prototypes to make our operations more innovative and efficient through better data-driven decisions. Previously, we have built assistants/agents that support our auditors in their reviews, semantic search engines that make it easier to browse tens of thousands of investigations and consultation responses, and automated classifications using large language models. You will help develop our data and modeling infrastructure, including building data pipelines and storage solutions, and influencing technology choices and processes to enable ambitious agentic applications.

We offer you a unique opportunity to explore new technologies and methods within AI and data analysis, and to work with both text and numerical data to create innovative solutions that make a difference in the state and for our citizens.

The Data Lab at the National Audit Office was established in 2019 to promote a data-driven results culture and develop new analysis and decision support in government administration through AI-based technologies. The lab has its own GPU infrastructure to use and train AI models. The lab also collaborates with other authorities, researchers, and private actors to develop tools and services that contribute to a more efficient government administration.

Your background and skills

You have

  • several years of higher education in computer science, machine learning, computational linguistics, systems science, or other education we consider equivalent
  • strong programming skills in Python
  • experience in practical work with AI or machine learning
  • experience in driving technical projects, such as application development

It is an advantage if you have experience with:

  • working with large language models, text analysis, semantic search
  • working with AI and machine learning frameworks such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, or scikit-learn
  • RAG-related frameworks such as LlamaIndex, Langchain, DSPy
  • ETL processes
  • Web scraping
  • working with AI-driven programming, e.g., with tools like Claude Code, OpenAI Codex, Cursor, or similar
  • working in government administration and contributing to its development

Your personal qualities

We are looking for someone who is analytical, self-motivated, has strong problem-solving skills, and is accustomed to driving your work forward. You collaborate easily and listen to others' perspectives and knowledge. We place great emphasis on your personal qualities.

What we offer

We encourage initiative and the courage to try new things – sometimes resulting in minor changes and sometimes in major ones. We follow developments in our surroundings and are open to reconsidering our working methods in light of new technology and knowledge.

We are located in pleasant premises in central Stockholm. There is an opportunity to work partially remotely. Read more about what we offer (https://www.statskontoret.se/om-statskontoret/arbeta-hos-oss/vi-erbjuder/).

We also audit Sweden's management of EU funds. We are based in Stockholm and have 220 employees. As of January 1, the National Audit Office was integrated into ESV, which means new colleagues, new assignments, and new exciting opportunities to work innovatively in a larger organization.
