The Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit (TIVA) is part of the university hospital care and is one of two intensive care units at University Hospital Örebro. The focus here is on the heart, lungs, and blood vessels. Patients are cared for by specially trained staff. At TIVA, advanced high-tech equipment is used, such as ventilators, CVVHD, intra-aortic balloon pumps (mechanical support for blood circulation), and ECMO (heart-lung machine for intensive care).

Patients treated at TIVA require intensive care following heart, lung, or vascular surgery. We also care for patients requiring specialist skills in acute or severe heart and lung failure and vascular problems. We have 6 care beds staffed 24/7. During this time, patients are monitored, diagnosed, and treated based on evidence-based and proven knowledge.

At TIVA, there is a professional team of anesthesiologists, surgeons, specialist nurses, assistant nurses, and physiotherapists. We work interprofessionally with a focus on the patient and take pride in doing meaningful work for our patients. The Department of Anesthesia and Intensive Care operates at the region's three hospitals: University Hospital Örebro, Karlskoga Hospital, and Lindesberg Hospital. It is a large department with approximately 400 employees. Our areas of work are anesthesia, intensive care, surgical services (post-op and day surgery), and a neuro-intermediate unit. At Karlskoga Hospital, there is an anesthesia department, an intensive care unit, and a postoperative unit.
