We are seeking a Laboratory Engineer for a permanent position at the Department of Natural Sciences and Technology.

Background

The Unit for Computer Science conducts research and education in computer science with a focus on AI, robotics, and cybersecurity. The unit has grown significantly and needs to be strengthened with a new Laboratory Engineer. In a field that demands custom-built and well-maintained hardware solutions and software environments, a laboratory engineer is central to ensuring both teaching and research function effectively. We are therefore looking for an engaged and versatile laboratory engineer who wants to play a key role in our operations.

The position spans several areas of expertise. We primarily value mechatronic competence (electronics, mechanics, and software technology), but we also welcome applicants with a background in software development or data management.

We offer a varied role with significant personal responsibility in a stimulating research environment. You will work closely with research and teaching in robotics and AI, alongside engaged and competent colleagues. For an overview of the university's initiatives in these areas, see https://www.oru.se/ai (https://www.oru.se/ai).

Responsibilities

As a Laboratory Engineer with us, you will have a broad and varied assignment. You are the person colleagues turn to when they need to construct custom solutions in electronics, mechanics, or software. You plan and prioritize maintenance work in consultation with the research and teaching group. You are also responsible for safety in the laboratory environment. This involves practical work with electrical and mechanical components, construction of tailor-made solutions, and maintenance of the robot platforms used in teaching and research, both preventively and in case of urgent needs. You are also responsible for ensuring our laboratory environment functions well as a research and educational setting. Responsibilities also include coordinating and structuring repositories for software and data, ensuring data meets FAIR criteria (findable, accessible, interoperable, reusable), and documenting data flows and metadata in collaboration with researchers.

Qualifications

The primary technical competence we seek is in electronics and mechanics, embedded systems, and robotics.

Competence in software development and DevOps is considered an asset. We also value competence in data management.

The position requires a relevant engineering education or equivalent documented experience. You must have practical experience with electrical and mechanical systems, as well as the ability to independently troubleshoot and solve technical problems. Good ability to structure and prioritize work in a dynamic environment is a requirement.

Previous experience from a technical research or development environment is highly meritorious. Experience in programming, particularly with ROS, Arduino, or similar platforms, is also considered an asset. Knowledge in software management (GitHub, GitLab, CI/CD pipelines) and familiarity with FAIR principles and research data management are also meritorious.

You must be able to communicate fluently in English, while good communication skills in Swedish, both spoken and written, are considered an asset.

Information

The employment is full-time (100%) and permanent. Örebro University applies individual salary setting and, where applicable, probationary periods.

Further information about the position is available from Unit Head Martin Magnusson, 019-30 38 70, email: [email protected], or Head of Department Henrik Olsson, 019-30 12 36, email: [email protected].

At Örebro University, we expect all employees to be open to development and change, take responsibility for their own work effort and quality, show engagement in collaboration and contribution to development, and show respect for others through a constructive and professional approach.

Örebro University actively works for equal opportunities and gender equality, and for our work environment to be characterized by openness, trust, and respect. We value the qualities that diversity brings to our operations.
