Third-cycle subject area: Biology
The Department of Forest Genetics and Plant Physiology, part of Umeå Plant Science Centre, invites applicants for a PhD position in plant development to join the Meristem Hydraulics Group.
About the position
This PhD project investigates vascular cambium plasticity during secondary growth, focusing on plant responses to fluctuating water availability. It examines how water status affects cambial activity in Hybrid Aspen and Arabidopsis thaliana. The student will combine developmental biology and physiology using imaging, image analysis, lineage tracing, and water stress experiments. Work includes greenhouse tree studies and Arabidopsis experiments in climate-controlled chambers, aiming for an integrated understanding of cambial development.

About us
The Department of Forest Genetics and Plant Physiology is part of Umeå Plant Science Centre (UPSC, https://www.upsc.se/), a centre of excellence for experimental plant research and forest biotechnology in Northern Sweden. Our mission is to perform excellent and innovative basic research and generate knowledge that benefits forestry, agriculture, environment, and society. We work across a wide range of disciplines in plant science, from cell biology to ecophysiology and from basic research to industrial applications. Our common goal is to understand plants' ability to grow, adapt, and acclimate to a changing world and how we can breed better plants.
