We who work at University West make a difference every day. Do you want to do that too?
University West is recruiting an Associate Professor in Additive Manufacturing
The position of Associate Professor is located within the Division of Mechanical Engineering at the Department of Engineering Science at University West. This division constitutes an important pillar in University West's complete academic environment within production technology. It consists of approximately 70 researchers, research engineers, and doctoral students and conducts research on manufacturing processes such as welding, additive manufacturing (AM) in metals, and thermal spraying, with the overarching goal of improving quality, efficiency, and reducing environmental impact. The Production Technology research facility has state-of-the-art equipment, including AM systems for laser beam, electron beam, and arc for metals in the form of wire, blown powder, and powder bed. It also has a well-equipped laboratory for material characterization with, among other things, electron microscopy, material testing, and physical simulation (Gleeble). Research within AM is conducted mainly experimentally and through modeling and simulation to understand, develop, and improve processes, process monitoring and control, microstructure, and mechanical performance for a variety of metal alloys. This interdisciplinary and collaborative research is characterized by close cooperation with industry and is largely externally funded.
Responsibilities:
The research focus is on additive manufacturing with powder bed technology, with an emphasis on advanced materials such as titanium alloys, nickel-based superalloys, steel, and aluminum alloys. Your areas of responsibility will include leading a research group, participating in research projects, project management, and most importantly, actively securing funding for future projects, both for yourself and for others. We expect a blend of creativity, focus, independence, and initiative, combined with collaborative skills. As a teacher, you are expected to teach at all levels and supervise doctoral students and degree projects. The position is an associate professorship with the possibility of promotion to full professor for outstanding candidates.
Qualification requirements for employment as an Associate Professor:
- Demonstrated pedagogical skill (Chapter 4, Section 4 of the Higher Education Act). Applicants who lack pedagogical merits from an academic environment must have competence equivalent to the university college's qualification requirements, although this may have been achieved in ways other than within the academic environment.
- Completed university pedagogical training of at least ten weeks or equivalent competence. If university pedagogical training is lacking, employment can still take place provided that the employee completes the training during the first two years of employment. Applicants are expected to be able to teach in Swedish within two years of employment.
- A doctoral degree in mechanical engineering, preferably with a focus on additive manufacturing and/or materials science, or equivalent scientific competence or some other professional skill that is significant with regard to the subject content of the employment and the tasks to be included in the employment (Chapter 4, Section 4 of the Higher Education Act).
For this employment, the following is also required:
Good merits regarding:
- Collaborative skills
- Scientific leadership
- High-quality, independent scientific research
- Leading research projects
- Successful applications, some of which must have been made in collaboration with industry partners
As well as documented experience of:
- Additive manufacturing processes for powder bed fusion with metal alloys
- Supervision of students
- Teaching at basic and/or advanced levels
And:
- Excellent knowledge of English, both written and spoken
Merits for the employment include experience of:
- Metal alloys such as Ti-alloys and Ni-alloys
- Process physics/control/development
- Research in collaboration with researchers and industry
- Supervision at basic and advanced levels
- Course development
- Teaching in Swedish
Assessment criteria:
At University West, the following general assessment criteria apply:
- Pedagogical skill
- Scientific skill
- Collaboration skill
- Administrative skill
- Leadership skill
- Other professional skill
Particular emphasis is placed on the degree of scientific skill, as well as the ability to independently develop research and educational activities in collaboration with colleagues and the surrounding society. When employing an associate professor, pedagogical skill must be given as much attention as the examination of other qualification-based conditions. When assessing skill, the subject area of the employment, subject description, and tasks are taken into account.
Other information:
