Department of Immunology, Genetics and Pathology at Uppsala University

The Department of Immunology, Genetics and Pathology at Uppsala University has a broad research profile with strong research groups focused on, among other things, cancer, genetic and autoimmune diseases. One of the core ideas at the department is to stimulate translational research and thus promote closer collaboration between medical research and healthcare. Research is conducted within six research programs: cancer precision medicine, cancer immunotherapy, genomics and neurobiology, molecular tools and functional genomics, neuro-oncology and neurodegeneration, and vascular biology. Parts of the activities are also integrated with the departments of oncology, clinical genetics, clinical immunology, clinical pathology, and hospital physics at Uppsala Academic Hospital. The department has teaching assignments in several program educations, independent courses, and international master's programs within the Faculty of Medicine and the technical-nature sciences area. The department has a turnover of approximately 550 million SEK, of which about two-thirds are external research grants. The number of employees is about 400, of which about 100 are doctoral students, and there are a total of over 850 active in the workforce. Job Responsibilities

The project focuses on vascular permeability and the implementation of a new treatment for excessive vascular permeability in eye diseases. The job responsibilities include the following:

  • Injection of inhibitory substances into skin (so-called Miles assay) or eyes (intravitreally) in rodent models, followed by monitoring leakage of circulating fluorescent substances into the tissue.
  • Extraction, fixation, and immunostaining of tissues followed by microscopy.
  • Visualization of molecular interactions in tissues and cell cultures, for example through so-called proximity ligation.
  • Investigation of signal transduction in tissues by injection of agonists into circulation, followed by extraction of vascular cells (endothelial) and biochemical analysis.
  • Conducting and participating in structural protein analyses through modeling programs or transmission electron microscopy.
  • Genotyping and breeding planning of rodent strains.
  • Compilation and statistical analysis of results, both orally and in writing.
  • Some supervisory functions towards other project members, both within the own laboratory and external contractors.

Qualifications

  • Good theoretical and practical insights and experience in methods for analyzing vascular function, especially regarding vascular leakage.
  • Excellent skills in statistical analysis methods.
  • Very good knowledge in advanced confocal microscopy and electron microscopy.
  • Initiative, excellent social skills, and ability for critical thinking and troubleshooting.
  • Good verbal and written communication in English.
