Introduction
We are looking for a Health and Safety Engineer to join our Quality & EHS team in Sala. You will play a key role in developing our local QEHS work while also contributing to Metso's ongoing improvement efforts globally.
In this role, you will work closely with the operations and together we will build a strong, sustainable, and vibrant safety culture. You will drive the development of work methods, identify needs, and support managers and employees in daily health and safety work. Your work will directly contribute to strengthening our structure, safety, and long-term sustainability.
You will report to our Quality & EHS Manager.
The position is based in Sala, Sweden. The role requires daily presence in the operations and is therefore not suitable for remote work. Travel may occur in a limited capacity.
The Team You Will Join
You will be part of an engaged and professional team with short decision-making paths and a clear mandate to drive improvements. The team consists of eight specialists with broad expertise in both HSE and quality.
As a central support and quality function, we work with clearly defined responsibilities and support the entire organization in matters related to health and safety, security, and quality. Our mission is to ensure a safe and sustainable work environment in accordance with applicable requirements and standards, while also contributing to the continued development of the organization.
We work closely together on a daily basis and have established collaborations with other functions locally, nationally, and globally. Therefore, the role involves both operational presence in the organization and participation in common processes, standards, and working methods within Metso.
Your Mission
This is a role for you who want to be out in the operations. You will be a natural part of the daily management, close to operations and close to the people. Through your presence and engagement, you will gain the power to elevate the operations and contribute to a culture where it is easy to do the right thing every day. You will work both operationally and strategically, with the goal of building a workplace culture that lasts over time.
Examples of tasks:
- Conduct risk assessments and identify relevant workplace risks.
- Perform inspections and internal audits according to ISO 14001 and ISO 45001.
- Lead incident investigations and ensure follow-up of corrective actions.
- Train managers and employees in health and safety, security, and chemical issues.
- Report EHS status, deviations, and KPIs to local and global management.
- Develop and improve processes and procedures in the EHS management system.
- Collaborate with managers, HR, and the safety organization to integrate EHS requirements into the operations.
- Develop and optimize the use of digital tools and data (including AI) to streamline work methods, enhance analysis quality, and strengthen preventive safety work.
Who You Are
We are looking for someone who wants to make a real difference in an organization where safety, quality, and development go hand in hand. You thrive in a role where you are close to the operations and contribute strategically to Metso's long-term EHS work. With your analytical skills, engagement, and ability to build trust, you create structure, drive improvements, and help us take the next step in our safety work. You are curious, communicative, and comfortable collaborating with many different functions, and you are motivated by contributing to a culture where we work smarter, safer, and more sustainably together.
We are also looking for someone who:
- Has a relevant education for the role, preferably as a health and safety engineer, and is used to translating theory into practice.
- Has a good ability to interpret and translate laws, regulations, and standards into clear and usable work methods.
- Is experienced in conducting presentations, training, and internal audits with clear requirements.
- Works in a structured and analytical manner and can simplify complex issues while managing multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Is a communicative and attentive team player with an interest in people and the ability to find pragmatic solutions.
- Enjoys combining operational work in the organization with strategic development efforts.
- Is proactive and improvement-oriented, with an interest in digital work methods and smarter use of data.
- Has high integrity and good communication skills in both Swedish and English, spoken and written.
