Postdoctoral Researcher in Wet Laboratory

The Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics consists of about 250 people, including around 60 PhD students.

The department conducts world-class education and research.

In addition to our research groups in Frescati, we have several groups and national facilities located at SciLifeLab. SciLifeLab is a national center with the overarching goal of facilitating the intersection of cutting-edge, interdisciplinary research in life sciences.

More information about us can be found at: https://www.su.se/department-of-biochemistry-and-biophysics/ (https://www.su.se/department-of-biochemistry-and-biophysics/).

Project Description

Our research group studies the epigenetic regulation of human brain development under normal and pathological conditions. We develop and apply groundbreaking single-cell, multimodal, and spatial genomics techniques to understand how regulatory programs shape development, disease, and evolution. We have previously developed methods for multimodal single-cell profiling of histone modifications and chromatin accessibility (Bartosovic et al., Nature Biotech., 2021; Bartosovic et al., Nature Biotech., 2022) and for spatially resolved epigenome mapping (Deng, Bartosovic et al., Science 2022; Zhang et al., Nature, 2023).

We are now recruiting a postdoctoral researcher in a wet laboratory to apply these techniques to stem cell-based neurological development models to map human brain development and identify dysregulated regulatory programs relevant to autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The project combines 2D/3D differentiation models with high-resolution chromatin profiling and functional perturbation to link non-coding risk variation to cell types, regulatory elements, and molecular mechanisms.

Responsibilities

  • Culture and maintain human pluripotent stem cells (iPSC/ESC).
  • Develop and implement 2D and 3D models of human brain development.
  • Genome/epigenome editing using CRISPR-based methods.
  • Apply advanced single-cell, multimodal, and spatial epigenomic profiling techniques.
  • Collaborate with other members of the research group.
  • Supervise master's and PhD projects.
  • Write reports, manuscripts, and documentation.
  • Prepare presentations and participate in international conferences.

Eligibility Requirements

A researcher is primarily employed for research and must have obtained a PhD or have a foreign degree that is assessed to be equivalent to a PhD.

Assessment Criteria

In the appointment process, special emphasis will be placed on scientific competence as well as:

  • PhD in stem cell biology, developmental neurobiology, molecular biology, or a related field.
  • Strong practical experience with human pluripotent stem cells (maintenance, differentiation, troubleshooting), preferably within neural lines/organoids.
  • Solid background in molecular and cellular methods (e.g., PCR/qPCR, cloning, immunocytochemistry/IHC, microscopy, western blot).
  • Ability to work rigorously with complex protocols and iterative method optimization.
  • Experience in epigenomics (e.g., ATAC, CUT&Tag/CUT&RUN/ChIP-like methods), single-cell workflows (e.g., 10x), spatial methods, and/or CRISPR perturbation methods.
  • Team-oriented attitude and strong communication skills in English.
