Our Operations
The authority manages one of Northern Europe's largest museum collections with approximately eleven million objects and a multi-hundred-year history of collecting. The collections include everything from prehistoric ceramics, osteological material, coins from the Viking Age, and medieval crucifixes to book collections from the 17th century, textiles from the royal wardrobes, molds for paper production, and testimonies from Holocaust survivors. The collections grow through object accession from archaeological contract work and active collecting.
The Unit for Cultural Historical Collections is responsible for the collections at the Royal Armory, the Royal Coin Cabinet, and the Museum of the Holocaust in Sweden. The unit is one of three units within the Department of Collections and Research. As the authority's expert unit on matters concerning cultural historical collections and their contexts, the unit's staff participates in various projects, responds to inquiries, and processes loans. Acquisition and accession of newly arrived material is a central part of the unit's work. The unit also works with other collection management tasks, such as storage issues and preventive and active conservation. Furthermore, the unit's staff collaborates with personnel from other departments on program activities, exhibition production, and management of permanent exhibitions. The vision of the National Historical Museums is, “Together we make history meaningful for more!”
We are now looking for a collection archivist focused on the collections of the Museum of the Holocaust in Sweden. The collections of the Museum of the Holocaust in Sweden include objects, archives, and digital items related to Sweden and the Holocaust. We are looking for someone with professional experience in cultural historical archives who wants to be proactive in developing our work and the collections we manage.
Job Responsibilities
As an archivist in the unit, you will work with the archive collections across the entire authority but with a particular responsibility for the collections at the Museum of the Holocaust in Sweden. The position includes:
- In close collaboration with colleagues, develop and implement processes for documentation and management of collection archives related to the Museum of the Holocaust in Sweden.
- Organize and catalog collection archives.
- Make collection archives accessible through digital channels, collection visits, and educational activities.
- Contribute expertise to the authority's various activities, such as exhibition production or other public activities.
- Work with the department's conservators on preventive measures to ensure the long-term preservation of the archive collections.
- Collaborate with the authority's lawyer and other experts to develop our work on handling personal data and copyright in collection management.
Qualifications
You should have a university or college degree that includes archival science with at least 60 credits. Additional qualifications in a relevant subject for the position, such as history or ethnology, are advantageous. We expect you to have studied at least at the master's level, while doctoral studies are meritorious. Professional experience working with cultural historical archives is a requirement. Since the position primarily focuses on the collections of the Museum of the Holocaust in Sweden, experience working with Holocaust issues is advantageous, as well as knowledge of and professional experience working with digital collection management systems. Personal data and copyright issues are common, so experience and knowledge of legislation and practices in these areas are also advantageous. Since the unit works with research questions in various ways, experience working on research projects is a plus. However, research is not included in the position. The position involves both national and international contacts and assignments, and you need to be able to express yourself fluently in Swedish and English, both verbally and in writing. Additional relevant language skills are an asset.
As the position involves creating structures and routines for managing a collection archive under development, we see that you are an analytical and structured person with a very good understanding of digital systems and are accustomed to taking responsibility and driving issues forward. We work in a matrix organization where effective collaboration between different competencies is a key factor. Therefore, we place great importance on personal qualities such as social competence, being solution-oriented, and having good collaboration skills. It is a plus if you have a driver's license for a passenger car.
We Offer
The employment is a permanent position, and we apply a 6-month probationary period. Start date is negotiable.
