Workplace Description
The Department of Building and Environmental Technology has a stimulating and international environment consisting of doctoral students, postdoctoral researchers, and teachers from many parts of the world.
Here, research and teaching take place in an open and progressive climate with challenges and collaborations both within academia and with industry partners, both nationally and internationally. The workplace will be the Department of Technical Water Resources at the Department of Building and Environmental Technology at LTH. Here, research and teaching are conducted on how water behaves and is transported in nature and in the built environment. This includes studies on rainfall and stormwater, how water and meltwater reach watercourses, flooding, and methods to eliminate or limit the negative impact of flooding on the environment, water flow in soil and watercourses, factors affecting water use, water quality, coastal hydraulics, and erosion processes. The department has approximately 30 employees and about 20 doctoral students. The advertised position will be placed in the hydraulics and hydrology group, which studies precipitation, runoff, and flow in watercourses.

Job Responsibilities
The researcher will work in the STORM_SAFE project, which is an INTERREG North Sea Programme project co-financed by the EU in an international collaboration between 11 partners in the North Sea region. Read more here (https://www.interregnorthsea.eu/stormsafe/about-us).
The focus is to develop smart systems for controlling and regulating water using control systems to manage complex challenges with high water flows. The researcher will particularly delve into Mölndalsån in Gothenburg to investigate how water can be better regulated and create knowledge for future systems.
You will have particular responsibility for evaluating existing hydraulic models of Mölndalsån developed by the city of Gothenburg in its flood protection program regarding flood protection. You will also integrate relevant parts of the models developed by the other partners in STORM_SAFE for flood protection primarily for the city of Gothenburg. You will use flow models for the North Sea and Göta älv in your work to calculate various scenarios that may lead to flood risk and how to protect people, buildings, and infrastructure through hydraulic control of the watercourses in Gothenburg, with an emphasis on Mölndalsån. The position includes meetings with representatives from the city of Gothenburg as well as several project meetings with other partners in STORM_SAFE from Belgium, Denmark, France, the Netherlands, and Germany.
The job responsibilities include:
- supporting the research group, participating in research within the subject area
- supervision of thesis students.
- assisting in seeking external research funding.
- collaboration with industry and society.
- administration related to the above job responsibilities is included.
Qualifications
Eligible for employment as a researcher is one who has obtained a doctoral degree.
Requirements for the position are:
- completed doctoral degree in hydrology, hydraulics, or technical water resources
- very good knowledge of English, both spoken and written
- good knowledge in the field of technical water resources and hydrodynamics
- experience in programming in Python and working with GIS-based data
- Self-motivated, Persistent, Cooperative, Initiative-taking, Stable, Structured, Independent, Creative
- Written, analytical, and mathematical skills.
Meritorious for the position are:
- knowledge of flood planning
- experience of international project collaboration and work in EU-funded projects
- experience in statistical analysis and simulation, including Monte Carlo simulations
Other
The employment is limited to the period 2026-06-01 - 2027-05-31 and involves a workload of 100%.
Researchers are covered by the local collective agreement on annual working time for researchers and assistant researchers. The planning of annual working time is done in dialogue between the manager and the employee.
