Various socially relevant issues arising from globalization, sustainability, and digitalization are our focus. Internationally, our research contributes to issues regarding the conditions of vulnerable children and youth, the mission and quality of preschool, migration and other societal changes, violence and racism in schools and leisure, and the consequences of digitalization for education and working life.
GRAITE (Graduate School for AI in Teacher Education) is a national graduate school that brings together nine Swedish higher education institutions to study how artificial intelligence is shaped in and shapes teacher education and the teaching profession. Based on the TPACK framework, GRAITE focuses on how AI can be integrated pedagogically, meaningfully, ethically, and democratically in teacher education. The graduate school offers courses, seminars, supervision, and both national and international collaboration within the research consortium GradeResearch, which includes the University of Gothenburg.
Education is a subject at the doctoral level focusing on processes, both formal and informal, through which individuals are shaped and transformed within various social, cultural, and historical contexts. This includes various dimensions of upbringing, education, teaching, learning, and other influencing processes.
Job Responsibilities
The dissertation work for this doctoral position will focus on artificial intelligence (AI) in relation to teacher education and the professional practice of teacher educators, in line with the overarching framework of GRAITE. Within this framework, the research can have a practice-oriented anchoring, with the opportunity to contribute to the understanding of how AI reshapes relationships, distribution of responsibility, and agency in educational contexts. Within the scope of the dissertation work, particular emphasis may be placed on relational perspectives on human-technology interaction, for example, how professional judgments are shaped in collaboration with AI systems, or how assessment and suspicions of cheating are affected by generative language models. Another possible direction is to investigate tensions that arise when individually targeted AI tools are used in collaborative teaching environments. The work can also be design-oriented and highlight how transparency, visualization of AI-generated material, or the development of collaborative AI tools can support pedagogical practice.
Assessment Criteria
Selection among applicants who meet the requirements for basic and specific eligibility is based on the ability to benefit from the doctoral education.
Given the research focus on visitors' informal learning at a Swedish science center and that the teacher education where the doctoral student will teach is conducted in Swedish, it is a requirement that the applicant is proficient in a Scandinavian language in both spoken and written form. Documented experience of qualitative research methods, particularly video observation and interaction analysis, is meritorious.
The selection is based on the following assessment criteria:
- quality of the qualifying thesis (or equivalent document).
- quality of the submitted research proposal and its relevance to this announcement's focus.
The research proposal is assessed based on the research idea's originality, its scientific relevance to the specific focus, and whether it addresses justified and researchable questions and proposes adequate forms for implementation. Follow-up interviews and work samples will be offered to applicants with the most relevant research proposals.
