We unite in our efforts to understand, explain, and improve our world and the conditions of people.

Lund University welcomes applicants from diverse backgrounds and experiences. Gender equality, equal opportunities, and diversity are fundamental principles for all parts of our operations.

Job Responsibilities:

The PhD program consists of 240 ECTS credits (equivalent to four years of full-time study). It formally concludes with the doctoral candidate publicly defending their printed doctoral thesis. The holder of a PhD position has the primary obligation to successfully complete the doctoral education culminating in a doctoral degree. Regulations regarding employment as a full-time PhD student are found in the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 5, Sections 1-7.

The holder of a PhD position is expected to actively participate in the department's research and teaching environment and may need to perform departmental duties, primarily teaching, amounting to about 20 percent of full-time.

The holder of the position should focus their research on the areas of cultural geography and economic geography, preferably linked to ongoing research activities at the department (for more information see: https://www.keg.lu.se/start (https://www.keg.lu.se/start)). More information about the PhD program at the Department of Cultural Geography can be found at https://www.keg.lu.se/forskning/forskarutbildning/doktorandutbildning-i-kulturgeografi-och-ekonomisk-geografi (https://www.keg.lu.se/forskning/forskarutbildning/doktorandutbildning-i-kulturgeografi-och-ekonomisk-geografi).

Eligibility/Requirements:

To be eligible for doctoral education, an applicant must have completed a master's degree, have completed studies corresponding to at least 240 ECTS credits, of which at least 60 ECTS credits at the master's level, or have acquired comparable education in another way in Sweden or abroad.

In addition to the above requirements, the specific eligibility requirements for the PhD program in cultural geography and economic geography are a master's degree in cultural geography and economic geography or another relevant subject. The examination must include independent work of at least 30 ECTS credits, of which at least half is at the master's level. The applicant must also have proficiency in English, both spoken and written, equivalent to English B from Swedish upper secondary school. The assessment will be based on national guidelines.

Employment of PhD candidates is regulated in the Compilation of Regulations 1998: 80. Only those who are or have been admitted to doctoral education may be employed in PhD positions. In filling such a position, the primary consideration shall be given to the student's ability to benefit from the doctoral education. In addition to focusing on studies, it may be required that the appointed PhD candidate works with educational tasks, research, and administration, according to specific regulations in the ordinance.

Assessment Criteria:

In accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 5, Section 5, special importance shall be attached to the applicant's ability to successfully complete the doctoral education, as evidenced by academic qualifications and merits.

Applications will further be assessed according to the following criteria:

  • The relevance (and originality) of the proposed research in relation to cultural geographic/economic geographic theory/methodology and debates/problems.
  • The ability to write and structure an academic text.
  • The ability to engage consistently and realistically with theory and methodology.
  • Potential contribution to the department and the department's ability to support the proposed research.

The Department of Cultural Geography and Economic Geography encourages project proposals that complement rather than duplicate existing research at the department and within the discipline more generally. In other words, the department is less interested in empirical applications of well-established perspectives and values proposals that suggest opportunities to advance cultural geographic research.

Application:

The application should include:

  • Answer to the question: What do you want to research and why is it important and interesting? You may include key references (author and year, full reference in a separate box below). Max. 4,000 characters (with spaces) in the writing box.
  • Answer to the question: How does your proposed research engage with cultural geographic/economic geographic theory/methodology and debates/problems? You should include key references (author and year, full reference in a separate box below). Max. 4,000 characters (with spaces) in the writing box.
  • Reference list. Max. 10 references in the writing box.
  • Name and contact details of 2-3 persons we can contact for personal references (in the writing box).
  • Curriculum vitae. Upload as a single PDF file.
  • Copies of degree certificates and transcripts. Upload as a single PDF file.

No other material should be uploaded or included in the application.

Selected candidates will then be invited to supplement their application with a brief research proposal and an example of written academic work, usually a master's thesis.

The application must be in English and submitted electronically via Lund University's applicant portal.
