At the Department of Neuroscience and Physiology at Sahlgrenska Academy, extensive research and teaching are conducted across large knowledge areas from molecule to human. The operations consist of five sections: pharmacology, physiology, health and rehabilitation, clinical neuroscience, and psychiatry and neurochemistry. The section for clinical neuroscience conducts clinical neuroscience research focused on physiology and pathophysiology in various diseases of the nervous system and muscles.

Neurology is a dynamic and expanding field of knowledge, with clinical activities linked to the highly specialized care provided within Neurosurgery at Sahlgrenska University Hospital. The neurological research at the unit has a strong clinical and translational profile. The research aims to develop better diagnostic methods and treatment options for patients with various types of diseases in the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves.

Responsibilities

The responsibilities of the position include conducting teaching at undergraduate and advanced levels, conducting research, supervising doctoral students and thesis workers, and stimulating research among all staff categories within neurology. The holder will establish a neurological research group and actively seek external funding to contribute to a strong research environment within neurological research and develop research collaborations within and outside the department at national and international levels. Another important task is to support researching staff in applying for and obtaining research grants.

The teaching assignment associated with the position is extensive, and the incumbent is expected to be responsible for teaching neurology in the medical program and participate in teaching neuroanatomy and clinical neuroscience in other programs such as speech therapy, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, and the specialist nursing program focused on neurosurgery. The applicant's professional experience should be applied in relevant teaching situations.

The incumbent who lacks higher education pedagogical training must undergo such training within one year from the start of the employment.

For promotion, the applicant must have acquired the ability to master Swedish in writing and speech at least at level B2 according to the CEFR no later than six months before the assistant professorship expires. Gothenburg University will offer Swedish courses that are mandatory within the framework of the employment.

Eligibility

Eligibility for employment as an assistant professor is regulated by the Higher Education Ordinance and Gothenburg University's employment regulations.

Eligible for employment as an assistant professor is one who has obtained a doctoral degree or has equivalent scientific competence. Primarily, the one who has obtained a doctoral degree or has achieved equivalent competence no more than seven years before the application period for the position as assistant professor has expired should be considered. However, those who have obtained a doctoral degree or have achieved equivalent competence earlier may also be considered if there are special reasons. Special reasons refer to leave due to illness, parental leave, or other similar circumstances. Reasons, dates, and the extent of absence must be clearly specified in the application and substantiated with certificates.

For employment as an assistant professor, a medical degree and medical license as well as demonstrated clinical competence in neurology are also required.

The ability to teach in English is a requirement.

Fixed-term employment for 6 years, full-time (100%). Placement at the Department of Neuroscience and Physiology. Start date by agreement.

An employment as an assistant professor is fixed-term and defined as a qualification position. The purpose of the employment is to give the applicant the opportunity to develop their independence as a researcher and qualify both scientifically and pedagogically to meet the requirements for eligibility as a university lecturer. The employment may be renewed, but for a maximum of two years in total, if due to illness, parental leave, or other special reasons, additional time is required to achieve the purpose of the employment. The requirements for promotion to university lecturer are based on the assessment criteria developed by the faculty board of Sahlgrenska Academy.

The department views positively the combination of the position as an assistant professor with an employment in healthcare.
