Job Responsibilities
We are looking for a student assistant with expertise in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), social geography, urban planning, and/or landscape architecture.
Within the Formas-funded research project HeatSafe, the City of Malmö is collaborating with the Stockholm Environment Institute until autumn 2027 to update a previously developed social vulnerability index for heatwaves.
As a student assistant with us, you will be involved in a small team of colleagues working on the project's deliverables. Tasks may include creating GIS maps, visualizations, and research work. To succeed, we believe you need to be an independent GIS user. It is also valuable for us if you have experience using sensors for data collection and managing large datasets.
The project includes both social science, natural science, qualitative, and quantitative dimensions. Students with diverse backgrounds can therefore be relevant for the assignment.
Please read more about Malmö City's social vulnerability index and previous work here: Extreme Heat in Malmö: Who is Affected and How Can We Mitigate the Effects? (https://malmo.se/extremvarme)
The social vulnerability index for heat is already used today as a prioritization tool, e.g., for targeted tree planting campaigns, but it needs higher resolution and more indicators to become a relevant tool in more municipal processes such as physical planning.
As a student assistant in Malmö City, you will have the opportunity to practice your academic knowledge alongside your studies with assignments within our operations. We offer you relevant and qualified work experience, valuable contacts, and salary. Working hours can correspond to approximately 10-15 hours per week.
Qualifications
The student assistant program is aimed at those who have completed at least 60 higher education credits and are still studying throughout the assignment period.
You are likely studying in civil engineering, cultural geography, landscape architecture, climate adaptation and risk management, or similar with a focus on Geographic Information Systems (GIS). You need to master QGIS, and it is advantageous if you have taken advanced courses in GIS. We also consider it an advantage if you have good knowledge of statistical methods and data collection.
As a person, you are curious, structured, and interested in strategic environmental and climate work. You should also be self-driven and interested in collaborating with others.
About the Workplace
The Environment and Nature Unit works with sustainable urban planning and sustainability strategies. We do this to ensure that issues such as air and soil pollution, noise, and biodiversity are considered in the city's planning. The Environmental Administration's mission is to improve the environment and safeguard people's health. We lead and coordinate Malmö City's environmental and climate work, conduct supervision according to the Environmental Code and the Food Act, and drive the transition to a more sustainable city. Through supervision, advice, and strategic environmental work, we make a difference for Malmö and the planet.
Malmö City's operations are organized into 14 administrations. Our common mission is to create welfare and sustainable community development. Together with the residents of Malmö, we are developing an even better city to live, work, and be in; differences, life experiences, and talents make Malmö a smart city in the heart of Europe.
