SMHI is looking for an engaged employee
SMHI is now seeking an engaged employee who wants to contribute to sustainable and secure oceanographic data flows – from the sea to international databases. With us, you will combine technology, marine environment, and collaboration in a mission that makes a difference.
At SMHI's Department of Community Planning, there is the Oceanography group consisting of 19 employees working with marine data and information related to environmental monitoring, physical and chemical oceanography, and marine biology. The work is carried out through assignments often linked to the Marine Environment Directive, the Water Directive, or similar agreements within the marine and water environment area.
The group is responsible for large parts of the oceanographic data flow from collection to export to international databases. This is due to SMHI being designated as the national oceanographic data center and being the data host within oceanography and marine biology on behalf of the Swedish Agency for Marine and Water Management.
About the position
To strengthen the group's work with managing oceanographic data, we are now looking for a natural scientist/engineer with expertise in data management and an interest in the marine area. You will work together with our experts to develop the operations, among other things to meet new requirements for classified data.
The position is focused on the management and establishment of processes that develop and ensure a long-term and sustainable operation of the oceanographic data flows with a focus on accessibility and security. This may involve system development, quality control, database management, visualization, and more. With us, you will work with the entire chain from idea to final result.
The employment may involve placement in a security class. An approved security review with background check according to the Security Protection Act (2018:585) is a prerequisite for employment in that case.
About you
We are looking for someone who is a natural scientist or engineer in marine science or system development/data management, alternatively with education/experience that SMHI assesses as equivalent. Experience and technical knowledge in programming as well as model and/or system development, and knowledge of Python or similar languages are required. Basic knowledge of Swedish and English is required, and good knowledge is meritorious.
The following are meritorious:
- Relevant work experience in IT or natural sciences
- Longer experience in programming, especially related to marine data
- Subject competence in marine sciences
- Licentiate or doctoral degree in a field deemed relevant by SMHI
- Experience working with large data sets and complex flows
- Experience with systems for quality control of data
- Competence in system architecture
Great emphasis will be placed on personal qualities, and to thrive and succeed in the role, good communication skills and a structured approach are required. We are looking for a person who appreciates problem-solving and has good analytical skills to develop creative solutions to the problems we face. Solutions are often developed in collaboration with colleagues and clients. It is therefore important to enjoy collaborating with others and to have the ability to convey knowledge and ideas. The tasks also require a structured, independent, and meticulous working method, while also having the flexibility that things can change.
Welcome with your application
Employment type: Permanent position
Location: Gothenburg, national and international travel may occur.
Application deadline: Sunday, February 15
