Summer Job in Environmental Restoration

Do you want to work this summer at one of the most exciting workplaces in the region where you will make a direct impact on our environment?

The main task of the Environmental Analysis Unit is to describe the environmental status in Norrbotten.

To support this, the unit conducts long-term regional environmental monitoring, assesses the ecological and chemical status of waters, and coordinates work with regional environmental goals. The unit provides documentation that facilitates water management and contributes its expertise in environmental assessments.

The Environmental Analysis Unit also runs several projects focused on measures in water and wetlands, often in collaboration with both regional actors and other countries, and participates in international cooperation forums within the Arctic and Barents regions. Currently, approved projects are being implemented at the unit, ranging from individual measures to large multinational projects lasting 3-7 years, co-financed by the EU.

Job Responsibilities

In 2026, the County Administrative Board will work on environmental restoration of water environments cleared for floating channels and drained wetlands in Norrbotten County. The work is carried out within the framework of the LIFE Revives, TRIWA LIFE, MyreN projects, and wetland restoration in protected areas.

Within the projects, we will have 3-5 so-called service teams to assist those working with excavators and to carry out manual restoration work. The activities are primarily located in Tornedalen, Råne River Valley, and around Arvidsjaur, but other parts of Norrbotten are also relevant. A service team consists of 3-6 people, and we need to hire a total of 10-18 employees.

The positions include the following job responsibilities:

  • Transport fuel to excavators using a rail vehicle
  • Conduct manual restoration of watercourses
  • Build ditch plugs and transport timber using a rail vehicle
  • Manually construct spawning areas for fish in watercourses (Hartijoki method)
  • Inventory and collect freshwater pearl mussels as preparation for environmental restoration
  • Perform chainsaw and clearing work
  • Dismantle dam structures

The positions last from June to September 2026, with slightly varying end dates. The work is mainly performed at various locations throughout Norrbotten, which means that overnight stays in other locations are required, and allowances are included. The County Administrative Board is responsible for providing accommodation during workdays, necessary training, introduction, and equipment for the tasks. Work is usually carried out from Monday to Thursday with longer than 8-hour workdays.

Qualifications

We are looking for someone who has:

  • the physical ability to walk in terrain, wade in flowing water, carry field equipment to and from watercourses, and create spawning beds and fell trees with a chainsaw.
  • a driver's license for passenger cars.

It is an advantage if you have:

  • experience in environmental restoration in water,
  • experience in fieldwork within the areas included in the job responsibilities,
  • Driver's license with extended permission for heavy trailers (B96 or BE)
  • experience working with chainsaws; holding a chainsaw license is a merit,
  • Driver's license for operating off-road vehicles.

As a person, you have good collaboration skills, are responsible, and have the ability to work in a team and solve problems that arise.

The County Administrative Board places great importance on your personal qualities.
