Job Responsibilities

We are seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher for a joint project between the Taheri Lab and Lundberg Lab, funded by Digital Futures (DF).

The position is located at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) and SciLifeLab (Science for Life Laboratory).

KTH is Sweden's largest technical university and one of Europe's highest-ranked institutions in engineering and technology.

This postdoctoral position is based at the Department of Computational Science and Engineering (CST) and constitutes a joint appointment between Taheri's research group at the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) and Lundberg's research group at the School of Chemistry, Biotechnology and Health (CBH).

The project focuses on the development of computational models for cancer risk assessment through the integration of multiple data types and risk factors.

The main goal is to develop and apply machine learning and deep learning methods to understand and investigate functional behavior in gender-specific cancer forms. The work will include:

  • Development of ML/DL methods for analysis of multi-omics data.
  • Design and implementation of computational tools and software for cancer risk prediction.

The position offers the opportunity to conduct groundbreaking interdisciplinary research at the intersection of artificial intelligence and cancer research, as well as to contribute to the development of new tools for cancer risk assessment with significant potential impact on healthcare.

Qualifications

Requirements

  • PhD or equivalent foreign degree in computer science, machine learning, statistics, bioinformatics, computational biology, applied mathematics, or a related field. The eligibility requirement must be met by the time of the hiring decision.
  • Strong background in machine learning and/or statistical modeling, documented through dissertation work and/or scientific publications.
  • Excellent programming skills, for example in Python (and/or R), as well as experience with relevant machine learning libraries (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow, or equivalent).
  • Experience in developing software and tools for research, including good practices for reproducible code (e.g., Git, notebooks, and pipelines).
  • Documented experience in analyzing large-scale, high-dimensional datasets, including integration of multimodal data and practical experience working in high-performance computing environments (HPC).
  • Ability to work independently and in interdisciplinary teams, as well as to drive research projects forward.
  • Very good ability to express oneself in spoken and written English. English is the working language in the research environment and is required for scientific writing, presentations, and collaboration with international partners.

Meritorious

  • At the time of the application deadline, no more than three years since obtaining a PhD or a foreign degree assessed to be equivalent to a PhD.
  • Documented experience in bioinformatics and/or integration of multi-omics data in cancer research (e.g., genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, imaging data).
  • Experience in interdisciplinary collaboration with biologists, clinicians, or industry partners.
  • Experience in supervising or co-supervising students, teaching, or mentoring.
  • A strong publication record in relevant journals or conferences in machine learning, bioinformatics, or related fields.
  • Relevant personal qualities such as the ability to collaborate, communicate clearly in an interdisciplinary environment, and work in a structured and proactive manner.
  • Awareness of diversity and equality issues with a particular focus on gender equality.

We will place great emphasis on personal qualities.
