Job Advertisement: Researcher in Electro-Optical Signatures
The Total Defence Research Institute (FOI) is a government agency conducting world-leading research in defence and security to support Sweden's military and civil defence. The research spans several areas, including underwater, cyber defence, space, electronic warfare, sensor systems, civil defence, CBRNe (chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and explosive substances), military platforms including weapons and protection, as well as security policy analyses. FOI's research plays a key role in building Sweden's defence capability.

About the Position
The Electro-Optical Signatures unit is seeking new employees who want to be involved in various stages of the development process, from idea and system development to practical field trials and data analysis.
An object's signature indicates how an object appears to a specific sensor. The sensor can, for example, be an electro-optical sensor such as an infrared camera. We are looking for someone who can contribute in several areas within the unit's broad activities related to signatures. This may include modeling signatures, optimizing materials to reduce signatures, or measuring signatures both in the laboratory and in the field. We are now looking for PhD holders who can research, solve practical problems, and lead projects.
About the Unit
You will be part of the Electro-Optical Signatures unit, which belongs to the Electronic Warfare department in Linköping. The unit's activities focus on applied research, technology development, and expert support in the signature area.
Do you have the competence profile we need?
Requirements
We are looking for someone who has:
- PhD in physics, mechanical engineering, computer engineering, electrical engineering, control engineering, or another field that FOI assesses as equivalent
- Experience from one or more postdoctoral positions, or relevant work experience that FOI assesses as equivalent
- Good analytical and problem-solving skills
- Interest in project management
- Good ability to express yourself verbally and in writing in English
- Very good knowledge of Swedish
As a person, you enjoy working in a team, have good collaboration skills, and can communicate well. You also have the ability to be self-sufficient in your work approach and solve tasks without detailed instructions. We place great emphasis on your personal qualities.
Meritorious
It is advantageous if you have any of the following experiences from work or education:
- Project management
- Experience in research and/or development projects
- Experience in conducting measurements in laboratory environments and/or in the field
- Experience working with spectrometers
- Knowledge in modeling and numerical simulations
- Programming skills focused on scientific calculations using programming languages such as MATLAB, Python, C/C++
- Driving license B

The position is a permanent employment that may start with a six-month probationary period.
