Workplace Description

Professor Vasili Hauryliuk is the research group leader for the Molecular Enzymology group at the Department of Experimental Medical Science at Lund University.

His research group works on the structural and functional characterization of the molecular mechanisms behind bacterial anti-phage defense systems.

Project Description

Bacteria are constantly attacked by viruses, bacteriophages. To resist these attacks, bacteria use many different anti-phage defense systems, the most well-known being CRISPR-Cas. In our laboratory, we discover new systems using bioinformatics, validate them in microbiological tests, and then characterize the defense mechanisms at the molecular level.

In this project, you will conduct a large-scale mapping of anti-phage defense systems encoded in bacterial genomes. In collaboration with experimentalists in the Hauryliuk lab, we will test the bioinformatics discoveries experimentally.

We Offer

Lund University is a government authority, which means you will receive special benefits, generous vacation, and a favorable occupational pension. We also have a flexible working hours agreement that creates good conditions for a balance between work and leisure. Job Responsibilities and Areas of Responsibility

A position as a bioinformatician is intended as an initial step in your career and as an opportunity to further deepen and broaden your research competence. Your tasks will include bioinformatics mapping and classification of anti-phage defenses encoded in bacterial genomes, development and maintenance of web-based portals that present the results of your analyses, and collaboration with experimentalists who will test your predictions in the laboratory.

Qualifications

Requirements for the position are:

  • Bachelor's or master's degree in a technical or natural science field, such as engineering or bioinformatics.
  • Competence in the key approaches to be used in this interdisciplinary project:
    • i) very good knowledge of programming in Python,
    • ii) very good knowledge of design and implementation of web-based interfaces with queuing systems, and
    • iii) very good knowledge of the Swedish national computing infrastructure.
  • A publication history in international journals.
  • Knowledge of phage biology, with a particular focus on anti-phage defense systems.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Great emphasis will be placed on personal qualities. The tasks require that you are both structured in your work and self-driven.

Desirable for the position is:

  • Familiarity with experimental techniques such as molecular cloning, phage isolation, and testing of anti-phage defenses.

Other

The position is a specific fixed-term employment for one year at 100% with a desired start date of 2026-05-01 or by agreement.

How to Apply

The position is applied for via the university's recruitment system.
