Research Assistant at the Department of Economic History and International Relations

The Department of Economic History and International Relations is one of the departments within the Faculty of Social Sciences, with approximately 70 employees and around 500 students each academic year.

The department conducts research and teaching in several different areas, primarily focusing on economic history and international relations.

Job Responsibilities

The main responsibility of the applicant will be to assist with data collection in a research project on the historical development of living standards in the British Caribbean region as part of the project "From Slavery to a Free Labor Market - Wages, Prices, and Living Standards in the Caribbean a Century After the Abolition of Slavery". The project is funded by the Swedish Research Council, approved for four years (2024-2028), and will conclude thereafter.

The primary tasks for the research assistant position include the collection and registration of quantitative empirical data from historical, handwritten source material in English from the period 1830 to 1945. Additionally, the applicant may assist with preliminary analysis of the compiled data. The applicant will work closely with two members of the research project.

Qualifications

We are looking for someone who has completed or is currently enrolled in higher education in social sciences and/or humanities, preferably in a field related to economic history, economics, history, demography, and/or social history. The applicant must:

  • have excellent English language skills
  • have very good skills in Excel
  • be able to work independently as well as collaboratively.

Previous experience:

  • working with similar or other archival material from the 19th century in handwriting
  • creating and managing large quantitative datasets similar to the current project
  • using statistical software, particularly STATA
  • using OCR software will be highly meritorious but is not a requirement for this position.

About the Employment

The position is part-time (50%) and temporary for a period of three months with the possibility of extension. The applicant will be employed by the Department of Economic History and International Relations at Stockholm University, but the work can, by agreement, be performed remotely as long as the applicant has access to good internet.

Start date 2025-02-09, but an earlier/later date can be discussed. Stockholm University applies individual salary setting.
