Description

Curiosum is a science center at Umeå University aimed at increasing interest and knowledge in science and technology among everyone, especially children and youth.

The operation includes an educational meeting place for children, youth, students, teachers, and researchers, a destination for the public, and a development environment for research, development, and innovation. Curiosum is located at the Artistic Campus at Umeå University. Curiosum features a dome theater (planetarium) for spectacular scientific visualizations as well as for showing film productions on various themes. Additionally, there are experimental labs for educational activities, exhibition halls, and workshops (makerspace) for digital manufacturing using various methods and materials. The operation comprises about 18 people and is led by a director. The steering group consists of representatives from Umeå University, Umeå Municipality, and the business community.

We are now looking for a substitute visitor host at 60% who can take care of visitors, both the general public and school classes, in exhibition environments, during activities and events, and work with other parts of Curiosum's ongoing operations, school activities, and technical solutions.

Responsibilities

The main responsibilities include welcoming, inspiring, and guiding visitors, both the general public and school classes, in Curiosum's various interactive environments and activities. As a visitor host, you will also be responsible for leading and supporting the guides in their work, which may involve:

• guiding and assisting visitors in activities, workshops, labs, and exhibitions
• conducting tours and presentations in the dome theater
• welcoming and providing service to visitors at the reception
• selling products in Curiosum's shop
• participating in events and arrangements at Curiosum
• compiling statistics from visitor activities

In addition to these tasks, participating in various parts of the educational school activities is also included – contributing to theme activities and programs for school students and other groups, both at Curiosum and in outreach activities, as well as contributing to the technical development of activities. As a visitor host, you will be part of a team that works together to provide all our visitors with a positive and inspiring experience. The work is carried out both independently and collaboratively with colleagues.

Qualifications

• Degree in natural sciences or engineering at the university level.
• Experience in learning in science and technology
• Experience working in public visitor operations with a focus on research and science, such as museums or science centers.
• Extensive experience working in immersive and interactive environments.
• Experience in leadership or coordinating roles.
• Strong interest in science and technology and the ability to inspire people of all ages, especially children and youth.
• Excellent ability to lead program activities in experimental workshops and exhibitions.
• Experience with administrative tasks
• Ability to take initiative, create good meetings, and provide engaging interactions.

We expect you to be service-oriented, flexible, structured, meticulous, driven, and that you appreciate taking responsibility for and ensuring that your tasks are completed according to plan. You express yourself fluently in Swedish both orally and in writing, and preferably in another language. Great emphasis will be placed on personal suitability and ability to collaborate.

Conditions and Application

The position is a substitute role comprising 60% for 12 months starting on 2026-02-01, or by agreement. The working hours are scheduled and partly allocated to weekends, evenings, and school holidays.
