Associate Professor in Cyber-Physical Systems

RECAT – Research Center for Advanced Battery Technology, is a new initiative at LTU aimed at strengthening education and research related to battery production and related activities such as supply chain and lifecycle management for batteries, vehicles, and other applications, including recycling and circularity. As part of this initiative, LTU is recruiting an associate professor focusing on digitalization, real-time control, and IT/OT integration for battery production, including digital twins, model predictive control, industrial IoT, and advanced automation architectures. The goal is to develop the next generation of production systems that are sustainable, data-driven, and scalable.
Subject Description
Cyber-physical systems focus on integrated software and application architectures with implementations of highly distributed embedded systems that interact with each other and their environment to enable secure, goal-directed, autonomous, and evolvable solutions.
Job Responsibilities
An associate professor should be engaged in education, pedagogical development work, and research at the university. Associate professors should also stay updated with international developments in the field and supervise doctoral students. They are expected to contribute to the university's development work, work to obtain external research funding for the subject, both nationally and internationally, and be available for management and administrative tasks. Job responsibilities also include leading research projects, communicating research results through high-quality scientific publications, being active in the research community in the field, and participating in international networks. A person assessed or recruited for a position as an associate professor is also assumed to be appointed as a docent, unless they are already appointed as a docent at another institution.
You are also expected to take an active role in developing the university's research environment in production physics, digitalization, and sustainable manufacturing, including participation in competence centers and collaborations with leading industrial and academic partners.
Eligibility
Eligible for appointment as an associate professor is someone who has demonstrated both scientific and pedagogical competence. Equal care should be given to the assessment of pedagogical and scientific competence.
To meet the requirements for appointment as an associate professor, the applicant must:
- demonstrate a research profile with clear progression after the dissertation work and scientific contributions corresponding to at least two doctoral theses, including the doctoral thesis
- have acted as an independent researcher, including experience in research-related trust assignments such as a reviewer for journals and/or opponent
- experience in competitively seeking and obtaining external funding for research and/or development projects
- experience in having held a leading role in research projects
- have published together with researchers in other research environments than their own
- have experience in supervising at the doctoral level and acted as a co-supervisor for at least one doctoral student for at least two years, unless there are compelling reasons otherwise
- demonstrate pedagogical competence through reflective experience, teaching skills, and teaching development
- have completed university pedagogical education corresponding to 7.5 credits, or alternatively acquired equivalent knowledge in another way
- demonstrate the ability to collaborate with the surrounding community, including making new knowledge accessible to the surrounding community and incorporating societal needs into research and/or educational contexts.

Other assessment criteria (in order of priority):
- Documented scientific excellence in cyber-physical systems, automation, or related fields.
- Documented experience of applying these competencies in industrial contexts, preferably within manufacturing or energy systems.
- Strong track record of publications in internationally recognized journals and conferences.
- Experience in supervising doctoral students up to graduation.
- Demonstrated ability to attract competitive funding.
Meritorious qualifications include experience in battery manufacturing, development of digital twins, IT/OT integration, or advanced model-based control.
