Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science
The Department of Animal Biosciences is part of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science and is responsible for education and research in several fundamental and applied scientific areas. These areas include anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pathology, pharmacology, toxicology, genetics, breeding, immunology, bacteriology, virology, parasitology, epizootiology, comparative medicine, food safety, bioinformatics, and One Health. Our research encompasses everything from production animals to sport and companion animals, laboratory animals, and wildlife. The department's researchers work across the spectrum from molecular mechanisms and microbiology to animal structure, function, and behavior, and how these are affected by breeding, physical activity, husbandry, production, stress, environmental factors, and diseases.

Subject Description
In the field of veterinary public health, knowledge about food and drinking water safety, zoonoses, and vector-borne diseases is applied and created in the interaction between humans and animals. The subject of food safety encompasses the handling, preparation, and storage of food and feed in a way that prevents poisoning and/or disease, focusing on biological hazards, from farm to fork. Risk assessment and risk management are central.
Job Responsibilities
The holder shall within the subject of the position:
- develop and lead internationally successful research within the entire subject
- develop, lead, and participate in teaching at undergraduate, advanced, and doctoral levels
- primarily teach within the veterinary program but also within bachelor's and master's programs and doctoral courses where the subject and related subjects are included
- develop teaching methods and the use of digital tools in teaching
- supervise doctoral candidates and candidates in specialist training
- collaborate with other research groups within SLU to strengthen the university's interdisciplinary activities
- contribute to the strategic development of the department, faculty, and SLU
- develop and maintain national and international networks with academia, relevant authorities, industries, organizations, and society at large
- apply for external research funding at both national and international levels
- communicate research results and other relevant information to the surrounding community
- perform administrative tasks within the department, faculty, and university.
The department has a bilingual working environment. The university lecturer will be able to perform most of their tasks in English. As an authority, the university has Swedish as its main language according to the requirements of the Language Act, and the holder is expected to be able to communicate in Swedish within four years of taking up the position. The department will support the holder in achieving this.
Eligibility
The applicant must:
- have a veterinary degree
- have Swedish veterinary license, or be eligible to obtain one after application in accordance with current legislation, regulations, and directives*
- have a doctoral degree or equivalent scientific competence
- be scientifically skilled in the subject of the position
- be pedagogically skilled and have the ability to integrate research and scientific approaches in their teaching
- have experience in teaching at undergraduate and advanced levels within the subject
- have good knowledge of English.
*Act (2009:302) on activities in animal health care 3 chap. Eligibility rules, Swedish Board of Agriculture's regulations and general advice on eligibility for animal health personnel (SJVFS 2016:9) 2 chap. Eligibility as a veterinarian, and the European Parliament and Council Directive (2005/36/EC) of September 7, 2005, on the recognition of professional qualifications.
