PhD Candidate in Nursing
The Department of Health Sciences offers education at the undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral levels.
Within the field of nursing, nurses and specialist nurses are trained with a focus on psychiatric nursing, child and adolescent health, and health-promoting nursing. The Department of Health Sciences offers a master's program as well as a doctoral training environment with nursing as the subject of doctoral studies. The research in the field addresses nursing and health in a rural context and is primarily focused on health-promoting and sustainable nursing, with an emphasis on patients, relatives, and society, as well as on professional development for sustainable nursing, focusing on discipline and society.
The department also has undergraduate programs in public health science, sports science, mental health/illness, health and rehabilitation in working life, and nursing education. Research is conducted in the fields of public health science, sports science, medical science, nursing, and working life science, as well as at the National Winter Sports Center (NVC).
Job Responsibilities
Independent doctoral education involving research of 80%. As a PhD candidate, you will be part of Mid Sweden University's research environment in nursing, where you participate in courses and activities. In addition to the doctoral studies, departmental duties of 20% may be included.
Eligibility
Chapter 7, Section 39 of the Higher Education Ordinance states that basic eligibility for doctoral education is met by those who have:
- Completed a degree at the master's level,
- Fulfilled course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at the master's level, or
- Acquired equivalent knowledge in some other way, either within or outside the country. The university may grant exceptions from the requirement for basic eligibility for an individual applicant if there are special reasons. (SFS 2010:1064)
For specific eligibility to be admitted to doctoral education, the applicant must have at least 90 higher education credits in the subject or a related subject or have acquired equivalent knowledge in some other way, either within or outside the country.
Other Requirements
You must be a licensed nurse with a master's degree in nursing. It is an advantage if the applicant has a specialist nursing degree related to the specialist training of district nurse, psychiatric care specialist nurse, or ambulance care specialist nurse.
Assessment Criteria
The following assessment criteria will be evaluated during the hiring process:
- Good ability to benefit from doctoral education.
- Documented good collaboration skills and ability to create relationships and networks.
- Good ability to express oneself verbally and in writing in both Swedish and English.
- Good ability to plan and organize work.
Processing

Employment and Start Date
The PhD position corresponds to an employment of five years and is expected to lead to a doctoral degree. In addition to doctoral studies covering 80% of full-time, teaching and administrative work of 20% will be included in the employment, making it a full-time position. If the pace of study in the doctoral program changes, the employment period will be adjusted accordingly.
A new employment as a PhD candidate is valid for a maximum of one year, and the employment may then be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time. Regulations regarding employment as a PhD candidate can be found in the Higher Education Ordinance (1993:100), Chapter 5, Sections 1–7.
Start date 2026-04-01 or by agreement.
