PhD Position in Administrative Law

The department conducts teaching and research in economics, law, geography, and tourism.

The subject of law conducts research in the field of administrative law and is responsible for teaching in the Administrative Law program as well as for courses in the Business Administration program, Social Science program, and Human Resources and Work Life program. Additionally, the subject offers certain independent courses.

The PhD position is focused on the field of administrative law.

The position is located at the Östersund campus. For this employment, it is required that the applicant is accepted into the doctoral program at the Faculty of Law, Uppsala University.

Job Responsibilities

Independent doctoral education including 80% research and 20% teaching and administrative work.

Eligibility

To be admitted to doctoral education, the applicant must be eligible. An eligible candidate is one who either:

  1. has obtained a Bachelor of Laws, Juris Doctor, or completed the law program in Sweden, or
  2. has acquired knowledge within or outside the country that corresponds to what persons who have obtained the aforementioned degrees can be assumed to have. In assessing whether the knowledge is sufficient, particular consideration should be given to what is required to successfully benefit from the education in the specific doctoral subject.

Other Requirements

The applicant must possess satisfactory knowledge of Swedish and English.

Physical presence in the office in Östersund is a requirement for the position.

Assessment Criteria

The appointment will be based on an assessment of the candidates' ability to benefit from doctoral education. In the assessment, the project description and the written legal materials are the most important. This includes written materials, published or unpublished. Primarily, analytical ability, the ability to structure and process, independence, and the novelty of the proposed research project will be assessed. In addition to the written materials, other merits may be considered in the assessment of the ability to benefit from doctoral education, such as grades from courses and work experience, completed courses, etc. Such merits include practical or theoretical experience in the field of administrative law. In assessing the applicant's ability to benefit from the education, consideration may also be given to their ability to collaborate in various forms, for example, in teaching teams.

Processing

Employment and Start Date

Doctorate, 80% independent doctoral education and 20% teaching and administration.

The PhD position corresponds to an employment for five years and is expected to lead to a doctorate. In addition to doctoral studies comprising 80% of full-time, teaching and administrative work of 20% will be included in the employment, which then corresponds to a full-time position. If the pace of study in the doctoral education changes, the employment period will change accordingly.

A new employment as a PhD student is valid for a maximum of one year, and the employment may then be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time. Regulations regarding employment as a PhD student can be found in the Higher Education Ordinance (1993:100), Chapter 5, Sections 1-7.

Start date 2026-09-01 or by agreement.

The project description should not exceed 35,000 characters including spaces (approximately ten A4 pages).
  • Popular science project summary (mandatory attachment). It should contain a short popular science summary of a maximum of 2,000 characters including spaces.
  • Legal scientific works referred to (electronic copies of books, articles, theses, manuscripts, etc.)
  • A recommendation letter or indication of at least one reference person (e.g., university teacher or employer). A statement from a potential supervisor regarding the project should not be submitted but will be obtained by the department for prioritized applications.
