Are you an experienced geotechnical engineer who enjoys variation, independence, and switching between operational, tactical, and strategic work? At the Swedish Transport Administration, you will be involved in developing, improving, and climate-adapting Sweden's infrastructure - every day, all year round.

Experienced Geotechnical Engineer for the Swedish Transport Administration Maintenance

Job Responsibilities

Our geotechnical engineers have a daily routine that can be quickly affected by unforeseen events - such as landslides, mudslides, floods, or other nature-related incidents. A clear example is the heavy rains in Västernorrland, where landslides and washed-out banks led to urgent efforts to secure the facility. In such situations, we need colleagues who can quickly adapt, take initiative, and provide advisory support under pressure - often with significant judgment and short lead times.

As a geotechnical engineer within the Maintenance area, you will work closely with the facility and serve as expert support in a range of geotechnical issues related to roads and railways. Your primary role is to support the maintenance operations in a region during deficiencies, damages, and urgent events, but in larger incidents, you may need to assist in other regions as we have a national organization.

You will also contribute in several other areas:

  • Acute expert support to e.g. project managers in road, railway, and bridge projects.
  • Strategic work, including collaboration with system departments to create conditions for future actions.
  • Support to the Planning area during external referrals, e.g. detailed plans and building permits.
  • Assessments regarding the impact of heavy transports, utility pressures (electricity, water, district heating, etc.), and other external influences.
  • Research, method development, regulations, and climate adaptation.

The work requires close collaboration with colleagues in other technical areas and external parties. You will also participate in network meetings and training initiatives and can contribute to regulatory and development work.

Other Information

Possible locations are Borlänge, Gävle, Solna, Gothenburg, and Karlstad.

Travel within Sweden occurs, mainly in connection with site visits and meetings.

Do you want a flexible everyday life with the opportunity to work from home? In this role, you can work remotely up to two days a week.

Qualifications

To succeed in the role of geotechnical engineer, you need to be independent, confident in your skills, and able to build trust in collaboration with others. The role requires you to quickly grasp complex situations, communicate your assessments clearly, and provide advisory support under both planned and urgent conditions.

You have strong analytical skills but also a good understanding of the practical reality in the field. In a daily routine that can change quickly, it is crucial that you enjoy variation, have the ability to prioritize, and can quickly shift focus - sometimes from strategic development to urgent field actions.

We are looking for someone who has:

  • A Master's degree in civil engineering with a focus on geotechnics, or another education combined with experience that we consider equivalent.
  • Several years of experience as a geotechnical engineer, preferably with both practical and theoretical expertise.
  • Very good knowledge of Swedish, both spoken and written.
  • Good knowledge of English, both spoken and written.
  • A valid driver's license (B).

It is advantageous if you have:

  • Practical experience from fieldwork, such as having been on-site and conducted risk analyses.
  • Knowledge of the construction and function of roads, railways, and bridges.
  • The ability to assess the load-bearing capacity of roads or railways during heavy transports.
  • Experience analyzing map data and information layers in GIS.
  • Good knowledge of geotechnical regulations within Swedish infrastructure.
  • Experience working with stability calculations, settlement assessments, or remedial design.
  • Understanding of hydraulics and water flow.
