Postdoctoral Researcher in Mathematical Statistics

The Department of Mathematics at Stockholm University consists of approximately 40 permanent faculty/researchers, distributed across three divisions: mathematics, mathematical statistics, and computational mathematics, along with about 50 doctoral students and postdocs.

The current opening is in Mathematical Statistics with research areas including discrete probability theory, actuarial mathematics, and high-dimensional statistical analysis, in addition to infectious disease modeling. The research group in infectious disease modeling typically consists of 3-4 members.

More information about us can be found at: Department of Mathematics (https://www.su.se/matematiska-institutionen/).

Project Description

The project is funded by the Swedish Research Council with Tom Britton as the principal investigator. The aim of the project is to improve statistical methodology for infectious disease data. A concrete example is to generalize the renewal equation for expected incidence, which is used to estimate the current reproduction number, but many other questions may also arise.

Job Responsibilities

The main responsibility is research under the guidance of Tom Britton, but it may also include teaching or other departmental duties up to 20% of the working time.

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for a postdoctoral position, a PhD or a foreign degree deemed equivalent to a relevant PhD is required. The degree must be obtained by the time the employment decision is made.

Assessment Criteria

It is advantageous if the PhD or equivalent has been obtained no more than three years before the application deadline. If there are special reasons, an earlier degree may also be considered advantageous. Special reasons include leave due to illness, parental leave, trust assignments within trade unions, service in the total defense, or other similar circumstances, as well as clinical service or relevant assignments in the subject area.

In the appointment process, special emphasis will be placed on scientific competence as specified in the Project Description. Competencies sought include probability theory, stochastic processes, epidemic models, statistical inference methodology for infectious data, simulation and statistical analysis with appropriate software, good ability to express oneself in speech and writing, and good collaborative skills.

About the Position

The position is full-time and is permanent, but lasts at least two years and at most three years, with the possibility of extension if there are special reasons. Start date is 2026-09-01 or by agreement.

We Offer

The research at the Department of Mathematics and its division of Mathematical Statistics is internationally renowned. The research group in Infectious Disease Modeling has several international collaborations, as well as close cooperation with KI, the Public Health Agency of Sweden, and ECDC.

Stockholm University is committed to being a workplace free from discrimination and providing equal rights and opportunities for all.
