Postdoctoral Researcher in Astroparticle Physics and Elementary Particle Physics
Fysikum is one of the larger institutions within the Faculty of Science, with a broad basic research activity, both experimental and theoretical.
The department has about 250 employees, of which 95 are doctoral students, and it has an international character. Fysikum is part of the AlbaNova University Center, which is a strong research center that, in addition to Fysikum, also houses the Department of Astronomy, the physics departments at KTH, and the Nordic Institute for Theoretical Physics, Nordita. More information about us can be found at: https://www.su.se/fysikum/ (https://www.su.se/fysikum/).
Employees at the department are also part of the Oskar Klein Center for Cosmoparticle Physics (OKC), a rich scientific environment consisting of more than a hundred researchers in both theory and experiment.
Stockholm University is part of the Stockholm Dual Career Network (SDCN), which supports partners of international recruitments with professional events, career-related advice, and by building social networks in their new hometown. Project Description
The project will be conducted within the Department of Astroparticle Physics and Elementary Particle Physics at Stockholm University, which currently consists of six faculty members, four researchers and postdocs, and seven doctoral students. The focus will be on the analysis of proton-proton data from the ATLAS experiment at CERN's LHC accelerator, as well as the operation and upgrade of the experiment. The group has significantly contributed to the design, construction, and calibration of the ATLAS hadronic calorimeter and Level-1 trigger, and is now responsible for parts of the Phase-II upgrade of the readout electronics for the hadronic calorimeter. The group also participates in the development of algorithms for data analysis, including the identification of bottom quarks and track reconstruction, as well as in trigger, data quality, and luminosity determination. Our main research areas are pair production of Higgs bosons within and beyond the Standard Model, as well as searches for supersymmetry and dark matter.
Job Responsibilities
The postdoctoral researchers are expected to:
- take a leading role in our data analysis activities related to pair production of Higgs bosons or BSM physics related to third-generation particles
- contribute to the development of bottom quark identification, track reconstruction, trigger, data quality, or luminosity determination
- contribute to the Phase-II upgrade of the readout electronics for the hadronic calorimeter
- contribute to the supervision of master's students and doctoral candidates
- initially be located at Fysikum, but also be able to spend extended periods at CERN.
Eligibility Requirements
To be eligible for employment as a postdoctoral researcher, a PhD degree or a foreign degree deemed equivalent to a relevant PhD degree is required. The degree must be obtained by the time the employment decision is made.
Assessment Criteria
It is advantageous if the PhD degree or equivalent has been obtained no more than three years before the application deadline. If there are special reasons, an earlier obtained degree may also be considered advantageous. Special reasons include leave due to illness, parental leave, trust assignments within trade unions, service in the total defense, or other similar circumstances, as well as clinical service or relevant service/assignments for the subject area.
We are looking for up to two motivated candidates who want to take a leading role in our research work. Particular emphasis will be placed on scientific excellence in the appointment process. Previous experience working within the ATLAS experiment, skills in data analysis and programming, as well as experience with experimental tools relevant to the project, such as bottom quark identification or track reconstruction, are considered merits but are not requirements.
About the Position
The position is full-time and is permanent, but lasts at least two years and at most three years, with the possibility of extension if there are special reasons. Start date in the first half of 2026 or by agreement.
We Offer
With us, you will experience the dynamics of the interplay between higher education and research that makes Stockholm University an exciting and creative environment. You will work in an international environment and receive favorable conditions. The university is located in the National City Park with good connections to the city.
Stockholm University is committed to being a workplace free from discrimination and providing equal rights and opportunities for all.
Contact
Inquiries about the position can be made to Sara Strandberg, phone 08-553 786 73, [email protected] (mailto:[email protected]).
Application
You apply for the position via Stockholm University's recruitment system. Attach a personal letter and CV as well as the requested documents in the application form. As an applicant, you are responsible for ensuring that the application is complete and that it reaches the university no later than the application deadline.
