PhD Candidate in Bioinformatics

About Us

The position will be placed in the research group for Translational Bioinformatics, which has extensive experience in developing methods and tools for large-scale data analysis within the life sciences. The research work will primarily involve new approaches in in vitro disease modeling and drug repurposing, combining practical experimental work with advanced bioinformatics and AI-based analytical techniques.

This is a collaborative project between academia and industry within the recently approved research profile AI-driven Precision Medicine, funded by the Foundation for Knowledge and Competence Development. The work will be conducted at the University of Skövde and at the partner company AstraZeneca in Mölndal. The PhD position is in the field of Bioinformatics, defined at the University of Skövde as the study and development of computer-based methods and tools for analysis, modeling, representation, and processing of biomolecular data. The doctoral degree will be in Medicine in collaboration with the University of Gothenburg.

Your Role

The main tasks are to conduct research, perform institution-related services, and carry out related administrative tasks. Additional tasks may be included in the position.

Qualifications

We are looking for candidates who have:

  • A master's degree or at least 240 higher education credits, of which ≥60 higher education credits at the master's level; or equivalent knowledge acquired within or outside Sweden
  • At least 60 higher education credits including an independent thesis (≥15 higher education credits) at the master's level in bioinformatics, biotechnology, biochemistry, systems biology, or a related field
  • Documented English language skills equivalent to the Swedish upper secondary school course English 6, or equivalent

Assessment Criteria:

  • Ability to benefit from doctoral-level education
  • Documented good collaborative skills and the ability to work both independently and in a group
  • Documented ability to plan, organize, and achieve set goals
  • Practical experience of experimental work and knowledge of sequencing techniques (e.g., Illumina, Nanopore)
  • Documented experience in statistics, bioinformatics, and visualization techniques with R, Python, and Linux
  • Documented experience of AI-based data analysis methods, including machine learning/deep learning and image analysis
  • Good knowledge of multi-omics data analysis, including single-cell RNA-seq (scRNA-seq)
  • Documented good ability to express oneself in spoken and written English.

In this position, great emphasis will be placed on documented experience in statistics, bioinformatics, and visualization techniques with R, Python, and Linux, documented experience of AI-based data analysis methods including machine learning/deep learning and image analysis, as well as good knowledge of multi-omics data analysis including scRNA-seq.

Employment Conditions

The position is a fixed-term employment until the doctoral degree is obtained, but no longer than 5 years. The extent is 100%, of which 90% pertains to doctoral studies and 10% to institutional work. Salary is based on the local agreement for salary scales for doctoral students. Only those who are accepted or have already been accepted into a doctoral program may be employed as a PhD candidate.
