Technical Surveillance Operator at the Swedish Customs

The Swedish Customs has the mission to limit organized and large-scale crime and prevent the illegal importation of narcotics and doping agents, alcohol, tobacco, weapons, and other goods that threaten life, health, and the environment. The Swedish Customs aims to reduce the number of criminal networks engaged in drug, alcohol, or tobacco smuggling or economic crime.

The Swedish Customs consists of four operational departments: the Control Department, the Revenue Department, the Intelligence Department, and the Customs Crime Department. The Customs Crime Department is responsible for the investigative activities of the Swedish Customs and technical intelligence gathering. The operations work within the framework of preliminary investigations of crimes or measures that will lead to preliminary investigations of crimes to prosecute the masterminds behind criminal activities, reduce the profitability of crime, and significantly disrupt criminal activities.

The preliminary investigation activities of the Swedish Customs consist of a national IT and Technical Center responsible for covert coercive measures, surveillance technology, and IT forensics, the Swedish Customs laboratory, and four customs crime units responsible for their respective geographical areas: South, West, East, and North. The units are divided into operational areas: surveillance, investigation of serious crimes, and investigation of volume crimes.

The IT and Technical Center is responsible for and develops operations with covert coercive measures and other technical gathering of information in the Swedish Customs' law enforcement operations.

Within the IT and Technical Center, there is a national and central function for coordinated technical intelligence gathering.

About the position

The Central for Coordinated Technical Intelligence Gathering at the ITC performs minute operational work and executes decisions regarding covert coercive measures. As a technical surveillance operator within the Customs Crime Department, you will be organizationally part of the IT and Technical Center led by a national unit manager. You will be stationed in Stockholm.

The ITC works with special surveillance methods and IT systems focused on covert coercive measures. The tasks are operational and event-driven, and the work is carried out in close collaboration with the operational surveillance activities.

Technical surveillance operators at the ITC perform minute operational work with a particular responsibility to continuously support the Customs Crime Department's and Intelligence Department's operations where covert coercive measures are included. Methodology and technology in the field are constantly changing, and as an operator, you will be involved in a challenging inter-agency development effort.

The work requires qualities such as speed, responsiveness, and the ability to operationally process information, as well as good judgment as sensitive information is handled.

The employment begins with internal training.

We are looking for someone who has:

  • Education or equivalent competence within the Swedish Customs' law enforcement or another investigative authority
  • Ability to present material in writing, orally, and digitally.
  • Good computer skills and a willingness to learn more
  • Swedish driver's license, class B for passenger cars
  • Good knowledge of Swedish and English in speech and writing.
  • Swedish citizenship

It is meritorious if you have:

  • Experience in surveillance, investigation, and/or analysis/intelligence
  • Technical knowledge relevant to the area of work
  • Language skills beyond Swedish and English
  • Experience working with covert coercive measures
