Your responsibilities

As a special education teacher at Berzeliusskolan, you will teach in a class within the adapted upper secondary school's individual program with approximately 5 students who have a severe intellectual disability. You will teach in six subject areas based on the curriculum for adapted upper secondary school. Teaching and developing students' language and communication, as well as participation, are central to the mission.

In your work, you are expected to take responsibility for mapping the student's abilities to meet the student where they are with the goal of enabling the student to reach as far as possible in their learning and development. You will establish action plans as needed. You will work based on scientific principles and proven experience. You will plan, implement, and evaluate lessons and the students' fulfillment of goals. You will collaborate with your closest special education teacher colleagues and student assistants in the class.

Your workplace

Berzeliusskolan is centrally located in Linköping in the Vasastaden district, within walking distance from the Travel Center. About 90 students attend the programs offered at the adapted upper secondary school: the individual program and two different national programs. The students studying here have intellectual disabilities and sometimes other additional handicaps.

At Berzeliusskolan, we aim to stimulate social community and develop skills to learn new things independently and together with others, and to use their knowledge. Teachers and student assistants work together to provide students with a safe and developing school day at "Berzan." We are a large team of special education teachers/teachers and student assistants working in a team.

You as a candidate

We are primarily looking for someone with a preschool teacher certification and a special education teacher degree with a focus on Intellectual Disabilities. You need to have previous experience working with students at an early developmental level/severe intellectual disabilities and be well-versed in the special pedagogy that uses a lot of sensory stimulation for development. Therefore, you need to have knowledge of early language and communication development, motor, social, emotional, and cognitive development to be able to meet the students at their level and challenge them based on their abilities.

You need to have experience and knowledge regarding vision, hearing, and physical disabilities along with severe intellectual disabilities. You have experience in interpreting close-to-body signals and mapping the student's communication to pick up where they are in their development and provide the student with the conditions to continue developing communicatively with the help of various forms of graphic communication and technical aids.

You have a positive attitude and bring enthusiasm and energy to your work. You have a good ability to create participation in the operation and can create and maintain relationships in the workplace. You have a good insight into how people acquire knowledge and can adapt your way of conveying messages to others. You communicate clearly. You are confident in yourself and see relationships in their proper perspective. Furthermore, you take responsibility for your task and drive your processes forward. You also need to understand that teaching occurs in a balance of care and pedagogy as our students have many medical needs that must first be met for good development to take place. You need to be confident in yourself and be able to work independently with students who have significant medical care needs.
