Research Leader in Defense and Security

FOI, the Total Defense Research Institute, is one of Europe's leading institutes for applied research in defense and security. FOI is an authority under the Ministry of Defense, tasked with conducting research, method and technology development, and investigations to support total defense, disarmament, non-proliferation, and international security. About the Position

In the role of researcher, you will play a central role in analyzing and developing technology, methods, and tools. You will work with advanced technology in areas such as simulation of flying vehicles and research on future navigation and control systems. The tasks are multifaceted and may include environmental monitoring, evaluation of existing navigation and control systems, as well as the development of models and tools for dynamic simulations of vehicles. Furthermore, you will serve as a resource for other defense authorities by providing support and documentation for both current and future systems. You will also be responsible for documenting and reporting research results, which sometimes includes publishing in relevant scientific journals and participating in conferences. You will be part of a research group where scientific methodology permeates the work, which is conducted both individually and in groups. In addition to working with your own group, we collaborate closely with other groups within FOI, other defense authorities, and in international collaborations.

About the Unit

You will be part of the Guided Weapons unit, which belongs to the Defense Technology department in Kista. Please read more about what we do: Defense Technology.

In the unit, we conduct research on guidance, navigation, and vehicle dynamics. We work with studies, analyses, and evaluations, primarily of weapon systems. Applications range from modeling and simulation of hypersonic weapons to the development of alternative methods for navigation. The unit's work aims to analyze the performance and capabilities of today's systems and to develop and evaluate new concepts for future defense.

Do you have the competence profile we need?

Requirements

• Completed or near completion of a doctoral degree in areas such as dynamic systems, control engineering, signal processing, optimization, systems theory, robotics, or applied mathematics.
• Good ability to communicate clearly and concisely in both spoken and written form, in Swedish as well as in English.
• We are looking for a person who enjoys working both independently and in a team, and who has good collaboration skills. We prefer that you have initiative and are goal- and result-oriented. Furthermore, you have strong analytical skills and can easily translate theory into practice and contextualize problems. You have a developed ability to quickly acquire new information and adapt to new areas. We place great importance on your personal qualities.

Meritorious

• Practical and theoretical experience with navigation and control systems, trajectory planning, simulation of flying vehicles, and software development in object-oriented programming languages.
• Experience with weapon-related issues from, for example, the Armed Forces, FMV, or the defense industry.
• Experience in project management of technical projects.
