Inspector for Contaminated Areas

Are you looking for a meaningful job and want to contribute to the work towards a non-toxic environment? Then the position of inspector focusing on contaminated areas at the Defence Inspectorate for Health and Environment (FIHM) is an exciting workplace for you. FIHM is responsible for supervision over contaminated areas, many of which are polluted by PFAS. We are growing and are now looking for an inspector for the section on contaminated areas. Experience in supervising contaminated areas is an advantage, but we also welcome individuals with other relevant experience or recent graduates with suitable education to apply!

About the Unit

The main task of the section for contaminated areas is to supervise the contaminated areas of the Armed Forces and the Fortifications Agency. We currently have 7 people working in the section, and we have experience from both consulting work in contaminated land and from supervising contaminated areas. The section is characterized by a strong team spirit and great commitment, with room for positive discussions and open communication. What unites us is that we are all engaged in issues related to contaminated areas and a non-toxic environment.

Main Responsibilities

The work includes, among other things, assessment and supervision in connection with development and demolition projects, review and supervision of investigations within the remediation process, as well as supervision of treatment plants regarding PFAS.

Main responsibilities include reviewing and supervising the Defence Sector's development projects within contaminated areas. This involves assessing remedial measures and notifications regarding the use of waste for construction purposes, as well as supervising contaminated buildings in connection with demolition, etc. Examples of other tasks included in the position are assessing and supervising treatment plants for PFAS-contaminated water, as well as reviewing environmental technical soil investigations, risk assessments, remedial investigations, and risk evaluations.

Travel is included in the position as you are expected to conduct some supervision on-site in connection with remediation projects throughout Sweden. You will be offered to participate in courses and seminars for further education. As an employee of the Armed Forces, you have three hours of training during working hours per week.

REQUIREMENTS

Qualifications

  • Approved relevant academic degree in Environmental and Water Technology, Geology, Geohydrology, Hydrology, Chemistry, Soil Science, or Environmental Protection
  • Very good ability to express yourself in spoken and written Swedish
  • Good knowledge of MS Office

MERITORIOUS

  • Education in environmental legislation
  • Current and relevant work experience with contaminated buildings
  • Current and relevant work experience in treating PFAS-contaminated water
  • Current and relevant work experience in MIFO inventory
  • Good knowledge of the Environmental Code
  • Current and relevant work experience in supervision within contaminated areas with PFAS issues
  • Current and relevant work experience in investigating contaminated areas
  • Knowledge of Swedish environmental legislation
  • Current and relevant work experience in working with Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
  • Driving license B

Employment type: Civil employment, temporary (12 months)

Start date: September 2025
Travel: There will be travel within Sweden with one to two overnight stays a couple of times a year. These trips are usually planned with good foresight.

At the Headquarters, there is the Chief of Defence and the Director General. The Headquarters has about 1,000 employees – both professional officers and civilian experts. As of January 1, 2023, the Headquarters consists of the Defense Staff, Operations Management, Military Intelligence and Security Service, as well as the Headquarters' Staff Department and independent supervisory units.
