Make a Difference. Every Day.

The area of operations (VO) forensic psychiatry is in a dynamic phase of development with changes in both legislation and care content, with an increased focus on outpatient care and expanded cooperation with the region's municipalities and the Swedish Prison and Probation Service. The area of operations is part of Psychiatry Skåne and consists of forensic psychiatric units in Trelleborg, Malmö, Helsingborg, Kristianstad, and Hässleholm.

Forensic psychiatry cares for a particularly vulnerable group of patients who are often among the most disabled and resource-poor individuals in society. The highly specialized care is based on the patients' complex psychiatric problems, which include severe mental illness, often in combination with substance abuse, social isolation, and ostracism, as well as somatic health issues as a consequence. The goal of forensic psychiatric care is to habilitate/rehabilitate these individuals to a drug-free daily life in society with increased psychosocial functioning and reduced risk of recidivism.

Within inpatient care, there are two treatment teams consisting of senior physicians, junior physicians, occupational therapists, social workers, psychologists, and medical secretaries. Each department has a care team, with nurses and caregivers, who serve as a resource for the team regarding the daily care of patients. It is the treatment team that, together with the care team, is responsible for the patients throughout their inpatient stay. We have established cooperation with our municipalities and care neighbors, as well as a very dedicated staff that works from a holistic perspective with the patients.
