The Swedish National Board of Institutional Care (SiS) is an authority responsible for individualized compulsory care for youth with complex psychosocial issues and for adults with substance abuse problems. SiS also executes closed youth care. We do this in youth homes and homes for adults with substance abuse issues across the country. Working with us at SiS, your professional life becomes an exciting challenge. Regardless of where you work in our organization or what position you hold, you help create life-changing change.
SiS Youth Home Bergsmansgården receives non-compulsory school-age girls. We have operations in Fjugesta, three miles west of Örebro, and a satellite unit in Gammelbo, 3 miles north of Lindesberg. The girls come to us due to psychosocial issues as well as problems with crime or drug abuse.
Job Description
Are you passionate about young people and want to work at a school with a good atmosphere, high quality, and joy in work? Now is your chance to influence students' futures and education in a creative and enabling school environment. We are now looking for a Study and Career Counselor for SiS Youth Home Bergsmansgården, a role distributed between our main operations in Brotorp outside Fjugesta and Gammelbo outside Lindesberg.
The students placed at the units are not subject to compulsory schooling. They study within the framework of the introduction program; individual alternative, but there may also be students subject to compulsory schooling as well as students within the framework of adapted school. Most of the students have had difficulties in schoolwork and have a great need to compensate for a lack of schooling. All students have an individual study plan where they, together with their mentor and study and career counselor, set goals and read basic school and/or upper secondary school subjects based on their needs. Teaching is conducted full-time in small teaching groups.
As a study and career counselor, your main task is to guide students towards further studies, internships, or alternative paths into working life. You are challenged by meeting students with different needs and prerequisites and have a good ability to create good professional relationships and motivate students to show them their possibilities. To thrive in the role, it is important that you are flexible and have good communication skills. The counselor role involves collaboration both within SiS and with other professionals around the students within social services and education administration, where the students' right to education is central. As a study and career counselor, you contribute to enabling continuity in the students' uninterrupted schooling both when they are placed, during their stay, and when they move out from SiS. At the youth home, there are several complementary competencies, and as a counselor, you are part of a cross-professional and joint work regarding the young people. Collaboration with, for example, nurses, treatment pedagogues, and psychologists, etc., is therefore an important part of your duties. The work also involves supervising and leading the teaching group in matters concerning education, working life, and society within the framework of general study and career counseling.
Qualifications
You need to be attracted to building trusting pedagogical relationships with students with psychosocial issues and in crime. It is important that you can identify and meet the students with high realistic expectations and support the student in finding their goal and paths that lead there. You are flexible, sensitive, and have an understanding that there may be obstacles while having the ability to see new possible paths for the student. We would like you to be unpretentious, able to set and maintain boundaries in a respectful way, and have faith that all students can find a path to education and work.
You are secure, stable, and calm, even in stressful situations. You have good cooperation skills, high social competence, and a positive view of students. You also understand the importance of adapting to changed circumstances and see the advantages of changes.
You are proactive and participate in development work to achieve the school's goals and always take responsibility for your tasks by planning, organizing, and prioritizing the work in an effective way. The work requires that you have a good ability to express yourself in speech and writing and that you think about adapting communication depending on the recipient.
Requirements:
- You are educated and experienced as a study and career counselor from the later years of primary school/upper secondary school.
- Have experience with students in need of support.
- Are well-versed in the rules of upper secondary school as well as relevant laws and regulations, including GY25 and other relevant steering documents.
- Have good computer skills and experience in information retrieval.
- You have a B driver's license.
Merits

- Have worked with youth in institutional care.
