The Swedish Fortification Administration (Fortifikationsverket) is a defence authority responsible for managing a portion of the state's real estate, such as properties intended for defence purposes. On behalf of the government, the authority carries out new construction and renovation, as well as the acquisition of real estate. The properties are to be managed to achieve good resource efficiency and high economic effectiveness.
The authority is to assist the Swedish Armed Forces in premises supply matters. The authority is also responsible for the acquisition of land, as well as the establishment, management, and disposal of buildings, facilities, etc., for the defence's needs in connection with international peacekeeping and humanitarian operations. Furthermore, the authority is to conduct fortification-related development work so that competence for the Swedish society's needs within protective and facility technology can be developed and ensured.
The Swedish Fortification Administration is led by a board. The Director General is the head of the authority, and the Senior Director is the head's deputy. The Swedish Fortification Administration employs 1,375 people. The headquarters is located in Eskilstuna, with regional offices around Sweden, e.g., in Boden, Skövde, and Karlskrona. In 2025, the authority's total property value amounted to SEK 40.3 billion. The operations are financed through rental income. In 2025, the income amounted to SEK 8.3 billion.
Qualifications
We are looking for you who are a demonstrably good manager and leader with
- experience of leading through other managers and developing organizations,
- experience of working in the public sector,
- good knowledge of the public administration, its decision-making processes, and understanding of the political structure within which the authority operates,
- experience of driving change and efficiency work,
- good knowledge of Swedish and English,
- academic education or equivalent
You must also have the ability to
- have a high level of security awareness and understanding of the security political context in which Sweden finds itself,
- represent the authority and communicate the authority's tasks in a clear and trustworthy manner both internally and externally, as well as nationally and internationally,
- establish and develop good forms of cooperation, build relationships, and create trust both within the authority and with other authorities, clients, and other actors,
- work strategically with competence supply, efficiency, and organizational issues,
- engage, inspire, and motivate employees,
- represent the employer's interest and, together with other heads of authorities, develop the state employer policy,
- have a flexible and non-hierarchical working style,
- contribute to the operations being conducted as efficiently and rationally as possible within given financial and legal frameworks,
- develop and lead the operations within the framework of a good administrative culture.
It is meritorious if you have
- experience of working with defence or security political issues,
- experience of leading an organization in rapid growth,
- experience of successfully leading, negotiating, and implementing major business and contract processes with multiple stakeholders,
- experience of working with large and complex projects, e.g., within the property and construction sector.
Other
Only a Swedish citizen can be appointed as Director General and head of the Swedish Fortification Administration. The position is classified for security. Security clearance with register check will therefore be conducted before a decision on employment as Director General.
