Blekinge Institute of Technology (BTH) is a place for curiosity and ingenuity, with a campus located in the heart of the Blekinge archipelago. We offer education from undergraduate level to doctoral degrees and conduct world-class applied research. We change and make a difference. Do you want to join us?

This postdoctoral position is part of the recently funded KKS Synergy project WorkFlex+, which focuses on developing resilient hybrid workplaces for sustainable competence supply and employee retention. The project is a three-year interdisciplinary research initiative conducted in collaboration with leading technology-intensive companies, including Ericsson, Telenor, SONY, Storebrand, CodeScene, Consid, and NKT. The project starts in September 2026, which is also the planned start date for the position. The position will be affiliated with the Department of Software Engineering.

The Department of Software Engineering consists of approximately 50 researchers and teachers from 20 countries. Our tradition in software engineering dates back to 1990, when we, in collaboration with Ericsson, launched Sweden's first academic education in the field. The department's research and educational environment, SERL Sweden – Software Engineering Education and Research Lab, has since developed into an internationally leading research environment in empirical software engineering.

Job Description

The postdoctoral researcher is expected to primarily contribute to two sub-projects: Onboarding and Integration and Innovation and Creativity. The work will focus on investigating how hybrid work models affect learning, collaboration, innovation, and organizational performance in software-intensive organizations.

As a postdoc, you will be a central member of the research group and work closely with both industrial and academic partners. Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Investigating how onboarding processes, mentoring, social networks, and governance mechanisms affect the integration and retention of software professionals in hybrid work environments.
  • Studying how hybrid work affects innovation processes, collaboration patterns, knowledge sharing, creativity, and collective problem-solving in software-intensive organizations.
  • Designing and conducting empirical studies using qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods approaches, including surveys, interviews, observations, social network analysis, and analysis of digital trace data.
  • Collaborating with industrial partners to identify challenges, co-design interventions, and evaluate alternative work models and management practices.
  • Contributing to the development of evidence-based frameworks, models, and tools that support sustainable and effective hybrid work models.
  • Publishing research results in leading journals and conferences within software engineering and adjacent disciplines, and presenting results to both academic and industrial audiences.

The position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to internationally visible research at the intersection of software engineering, organizational research, innovation, and the future of work.

Up to 20% of the working time may consist of tasks other than research, such as teaching, supervising student projects, and supporting doctoral education. The employee is expected to actively participate in the department's research and educational activities.

Qualifications

To be eligible for the postdoctoral position, the applicant must have completed a doctoral degree or have a foreign degree assessed as equivalent to a doctoral degree. The qualification requirement must be met no later than at the time the employment decision is made.

Preference will be given to candidates who have completed their degree no more than three years before the application deadline. If there are special reasons, candidates who completed their doctoral degree earlier may also be considered, for example, due to various types of statutory leave.

The qualification requirements and assessment criteria are described in detail in BTH's Guidelines for Employment and Promotion of Teachers, available on the Vacancies page (https://www.bth.se/om-bth/jobba-hos-oss/lediga-jobb (https://www.bth.se/om-bth/jobba-hos-oss/lediga-jobb)).

Meritorious Competencies and Experience

In addition to the requirements specified under duties and qualifications, the following are considered meritorious:

  • Doctoral degree in software engineering, information systems, computer science, Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), CSCW (Computer-Supported Cooperative Work), or a related field.
  • Experience in empirical research within software engineering or knowledge-intensive organizations.
  • Strong competence in qualitative and/or quantitative research methods.
  • Experience with surveys, interviews, case studies, social network analysis, or analysis of digital trace data.
  • Publications in well-regarded international conferences or scientific journals.
  • Experience collaborating with industrial partners.
  • Interest in hybrid work, organizational resilience, innovation, collaboration, teamwork, onboarding, or management practices in software-intensive organizations.
  • Good ability to communicate orally and in writing in English.

High social competence and professional ethics are highly valued.
