The Department of Software Engineering comprises approximately 50 people from 20 different countries. Our tradition in software engineering dates back to 1990, when we launched Sweden's first education program in the field. The department's research and education environment, SERL Sweden – Software Engineering Research and Education Lab Sweden, has expanded since then and is now positioned as a global leader in software development research. The department is responsible for software engineering education from the bachelor's level up to doctoral studies.

Job Description

The position involves research, teaching, and supervision within software engineering. The applicant is expected to actively participate in leading and developing the department's research and educational activities, as well as in seeking external research funding, both nationally and internationally.

The position is focused on AI4SE (AI for Software Engineering) and includes research on how artificial intelligence, generative AI, and large language models can support and transform working methods, processes, and tools in software development throughout the entire lifecycle. A specific area of interest within AI4SE is AI for software architecture, which includes AI-assisted architecture work, architectural decision-making, architecture recovery, and architecture evaluation. Candidates with a particularly outstanding research profile in other application areas within AI4SE are also encouraged to apply, including AI for requirements engineering, AI for software maintenance, AI for software testing and quality assurance, as well as regulatory compliance and governance within AI4SE.

We also value experience in empirical research conducted in close collaboration with industry or public authorities.

Teaching includes lectures, practical exercises, and course development at both undergraduate and advanced levels in software engineering. Additionally, it involves supervising bachelor's and master's theses and project work. There is also an opportunity to supervise doctoral students.

Undergraduate teaching is primarily in Swedish, while teaching at the advanced and doctoral levels is primarily in English. We expect a non-Swedish speaking employee to acquire sufficient Swedish skills within three years to be able to teach and communicate with the university's various units/functions in Swedish.

Qualifications

Eligible for appointment as Associate Professor is someone who has completed a doctoral degree or has equivalent scientific competence.

Primarily, the candidate should have completed a doctoral degree or reached equivalent competence no more than seven years prior to the application date for the position of Associate Professor. However, those who completed their doctoral degree or achieved equivalent competence earlier may also be considered if there are special reasons. Special reasons refer to leave due to illness, parental leave, or other similar circumstances (Higher Education Act, Chapter 4, Section 4a).

Preferred Competencies and Experiences

In addition to the requirements described in the job description and eligibility criteria, the following degrees, competencies, and experiences are considered advantageous:

• AI4SE-focused publications in highly ranked international conferences or journals within software engineering.
• Documented experience in conducting empirical research in collaboration with industry partners.
• Documented experience in obtaining and/or participating in externally funded research projects.
• Very good ability to express oneself orally and in writing in English.
• Ability to work independently as well as in teams.

High social competence and strong professional ethics are highly valued.

Start Date: By agreement.

Duration: Fixed-term appointment for 4 years, with the right to trial for permanent employment as Associate Professor. An application for promotion may be submitted at any time during the tenure as Associate Professor, but no later than 6 months before it expires.
