Description of the workplace

The Division of Security and Network Systems within the Department of Electrical and Information Technology works broadly with research in cryptography, data security, as well as wireless and fixed networks. The Security Group has approximately 20 members. The main research directions are cryptography, privacy, and system security for connected systems. The division drives several research projects through various large-scale research collaboration platforms and arranges workshops and seminar series, making the research at the division visible to a wider audience. Interdisciplinary projects are formed through our research collaboration platforms as well as national and international research networks, contributing to a dynamic research environment.

Specific subject description

We are now offering a new postdoctoral position in the field of applied cryptography and privacy. The research is focused on the broader area of privacy-preserving storage and computation outsourcing. Privacy-preserving computation outsourcing enables users to outsource computational tasks to a cloud server without revealing anything to the server about user data or even the type of computations the user is performing. The project will explore the applications of FHE (Fully Homomorphic Encryption) to realize such privacy-preserving systems.

The position is funded through the Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program (WASP). WASP is Sweden's largest individual research program ever, a major national initiative for strategically motivated basic research, education, and faculty recruitment. The program covers research on artificial intelligence and autonomous systems that act in collaboration with humans, adapt to their surroundings through sensors, information, and knowledge, and form intelligent systems-of-systems.

Responsibilities

The main responsibility of the postdoctoral position is to conduct research. Teaching may also be included in the duties, but no more than one-fifth of the working time. As part of the employment, there is an opportunity for three weeks of university pedagogical training. The purpose of the employment is to develop independence as a researcher and to create conditions for further career advancement.

The responsibilities include:

• Research in cryptography and privacy.
• Teaching at undergraduate, advanced, and doctoral levels.
• Supervision of thesis students and doctoral candidates.
• Working on applying for external research funding.
• Collaboration with industry and society.
• Administration related to the tasks mentioned above.

Qualifications

Eligible for appointment as a postdoctoral researcher is someone who has completed a doctoral degree, or a foreign degree assessed as equivalent to a doctoral degree, within the subject area of the employment. Proof that the eligibility requirement is met must be received no later than at the time the employment decision is made. Priority will be given to applicants who have completed their degree no more than three years before the application deadline. If there are special reasons, the doctoral degree may have been completed earlier.

Other requirements:

• Very good knowledge of English, both spoken and written.
• Good ability to work independently and to formulate and handle research problems.
• Good documented programming skills.
• Familiarity with various cryptography and FHE libraries.
• Publications in reputable journals, etc.
