Department of Psychiatry
We are Akademiska Sjukhuset – one of Sweden's leading university hospitals. As a county hospital and provider of highly specialized care, we offer healthcare to two million people in Central Sweden. Something is always happening here – a new life is born, a grandmother undergoes surgery, a colleague is hailed as a hero. Here, you will experience both tough challenges and fantastic events, within a strong community of colleagues. We welcome your application!
Our Operations
The Geriatric Psychiatry Outpatient Team is a county-wide specialist unit tasked with investigating, diagnosing, treating, and assessing care levels for geriatric psychiatric patients in outpatient care. The target group consists of older individuals with complex psychiatric conditions where symptoms are often related to aging, such as affective and psychotic disorders, often in combination with varying degrees of cognitive impairment.
The unit is also responsible for the investigation, diagnosis, treatment, and care level assessment of individuals with dementia and severe psychiatric symptoms, BPSD (Behavioral and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia), where care requires specialist interventions beyond standard dementia care.
The mandate also includes consultation, supervision, and educational efforts towards neighboring care providers such as primary care, municipal operations, students, and specialty trainee doctors. The team is multiprofessional, consisting of doctors, nurses, social workers, and administrative staff, creating good prerequisites for close collaboration around the patient.
Patients arrive at the clinic via referral or self-registration. The work also includes support and guidance for relatives in connection with the patient's illness, disability, and changed behaviors. Collaboration with the municipality and primary care is a natural and central part of the operations. Depending on needs and situations, patient meetings take place at the clinic or in the patient's home.
Psychiatry today faces a growing target group of older people with mental ill health and complex care needs. The position offers the opportunity to participate in development-oriented work within a specialist area of great societal relevance. We continuously prioritize the development of working methods and staying updated on current research in the field.
Your Role
Your working days will consist of standard specialist physician work at the geriatric psychiatry clinic from Monday to Friday, with both scheduled and acute assessments. A central part of the role is the consultative work, where support is provided to other healthcare providers. Patients and relatives are met at the clinic and through home visits across the entire county.
Your Qualifications and Competence
We are looking for you who want to work in a team where a holistic perspective, collaboration, and patient-centered work are in focus.
You will become part of a multiprofessional team where collaboration and shared responsibility for the patient's care are crucial.
We value that you are collaborative, solution-oriented, and considerate, with a good ability to contribute to a safe and respectful work climate. You are a specialist physician in psychiatry or geriatrics. Experience in geriatric psychiatry is meritorious. Pedagogical experience is meritorious as supervision and knowledge transfer are an important part of the role.
A valid B-driver's license is required as the clinic conducts home visits throughout the county.
We Offer
The position is a permanent employment, probationary employment may apply. Start date is negotiable. The employment rate is 100%, but there are good opportunities for individual solutions. On-call and standby duties are included in the position for psychiatry specialists.
The position may be filled before the application period has ended.

We see regular continuing education as necessary both to maintain and develop your own competence.
