Department of Geriatrics, Rehabilitation and Pain Centre

We are Akademiska Sjukhuset – one of Sweden's leading university hospitals. As the county hospital and provider of highly specialized care, we offer healthcare to two million people in Central Sweden. Here, something is always happening – a new life is born, a grandmother undergoes surgery, a colleague is hailed as a hero. Here, you will experience both tough challenges and fantastic moments, within a strong community with your colleagues. See parts of our reality in our photo exhibition; akademiskafotoutstallning.se (https://akademiskafotoutstallning.se). We welcome your application!

Our Operations

The Department of Geriatrics, Rehabilitation Medicine and Pain Centre is characterized by well-functioning multidisciplinary teams, which we are very proud of. Our department has a broad mandate where it is meaningful, exciting, and developing to work. There are good opportunities to participate in development work and research; in our work, we translate new knowledge into care.

Our Ward

On the Geriatric Acute Care Ward 30A, the focus is on the older, frail individual. We provide medical acute care with a rehabilitative approach for elderly patients with complex disease conditions and nursing needs. As an experienced nurse, you will use your entire combined competence and experience around the patient. Geriatric care takes place based on a clear structure specifically adapted for the elderly patient and their needs.

Within geriatric care, teamwork is central; both the collaboration of the multiprofessional team and the patient's participation are important parts of care. As a nurse on Ward 30A, you constantly collaborate with others, thereby gaining broad knowledge in different areas and a holistic view of the patient with various needs. Approximately half of the patients arrive at the Geriatric Acute Care Ward via the Emergency Department, while the rest arrive via our direct intake (from ambulance or the local care team) or via referral from other wards within the hospital.

Your Role

In geriatrics, we work with renewed methods such as daily steering, medical review, and CGA (Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment). The goal of these methods is to increase the quality of care by making the patient active in their own care and improving the work environment by ensuring the right person does the right things. This is ongoing work that is continuously developed and evaluated, and here you have the chance to contribute your knowledge and experience.

When you, as a newly graduated nurse, feel ready, there are several opportunities for you to deepen your knowledge in one of the areas of responsibility we have on the ward, such as nutrition or elimination. Together, we create a plan for development and potential participation in the important work of improving the ward, patient care, work environment, etc.

We also have an internal training program built over 2 years and driven by experienced staff within geriatrics, the Geriatric Academy. You can apply to the Geriatric Academy after you have worked with us for 1 year. The program starts every other year and has 12 participants (both nursing assistants and nurses) from the geriatrics section.

What We Offer

All new employees receive an individually adapted introduction of at least 5 weeks. We use a clear introduction program with an introduction booklet, and there will be time set aside for mandatory e-Learning courses in the PingPong system during the introduction and later during employment, such as fire safety, threats and violence, security, etc.

It is important to us that you, as a newly graduated nurse, receive support and help during your first time with us, so that you feel secure. That you gain the knowledge and experience you need to gradually grow and become more independent in your new role. Therefore, all new employees receive frequent follow-ups at intervals of 3 weeks, 6 weeks, 3 months, and 6 months, as well as as needed. The Deputy Ward Managers have an operational role on the ward and check in with you during weekdays, both during day shifts and before evening shifts. We have also hired an operational nurse who can provide extra support to you as a new employee.

Who Are You?

You are a newly graduated nurse. You have the ability to see and work with people's resources and place emphasis on patients' health literacy, participation, and shared responsibility. You want to work in a team and wish to develop in a multiprofessional work group. You are solution-oriented in what you do and choose to work on stimulating, joyful, and developing workplaces with the aim of providing the best care for your patients.

Stand at the forefront, welcome to us!
