As an Engineer in Pavement with us, you will work with the planning, ordering, and follow-up of measures that affect accessibility and safety in Umeå – every day. Here, you will have an important role in keeping Umeå's streets, cycle paths, and other surfaces safe, sustainable, and accessible – all year round.

About the role

You work with the operation and maintenance of the municipality's streets, squares, and cycle paths, with a focus on pavement. This includes asphalt, paved surfaces, and gravel roads. The role is independent and varied. You handle many cases yourself – from inventory to follow-up – while collaborating with colleagues and contractors. You also contribute the operational perspective to projects, building permits, and detailed plans.

The work alternates between planning and field work (approximately 70/30 depending on the season). The pace varies throughout the year – summer is more intensive, while the winter period involves more follow-up, planning, and development work. During winter, the role may also include leading and following up on parts of snow clearing on our streets and cycle paths.

Key responsibilities include:

• Planning, prioritizing, ordering, and following up on pavement measures
• Inventorying needs and assessing interventions
• Managing excavation permits and reinstatements, conducting inspections, controls, final, and warranty surveys
• Collaborating with contractors, consultants, and internal functions
• Contributing the operational perspective to reconstruction projects, building permit issues, detailed plans, and other consultations

On-call duties may be included, meaning handling urgent events that affect accessibility and safety.

Your workplace

You belong to the Pavement Team within Street Maintenance, a team of five people who are part of a larger working group of approximately 19 colleagues with various competencies within the operations area.

Here, we work both independently and together. We help each other when needed, cover for one another, and share knowledge. The group is characterized by an open climate, a solution-focused approach, and professional pride. Many stay with us for a long time, creating both continuity and security.

We are looking for someone who has:

• Education or documented experience in operation and maintenance work on streets, squares, and cycle paths
• A valid driver's license (Category B)
• Fluent proficiency in Swedish (spoken and written), as well as basic knowledge of English

Experience in leading and following up on operation and maintenance work, particularly within pavement, is meritorious.

• Service-oriented and communicative in interactions with others, both verbally and in writing
• Independent and able to make decisions in daily work
