National Bioinformatics Infrastructure Sweden (NBIS; https://nbis.se (https://nbis.se)) is a large and rapidly growing national infrastructure that promotes life sciences research in Sweden by providing support, infrastructure, and advanced training in the field of bioinformatics. NBIS serves as the bioinformatics platform at SciLifeLab (https://www.scilifelab.se (https://www.scilifelab.se)), a national resource providing advanced large-scale technologies and expertise within the life sciences, and is also the Swedish node in the European ELIXIR infrastructure for biological information.

One of our data stewards/bioinformaticians will be on parental leave, and we are therefore seeking, for a fixed-term period, a substitute data steward or bioinformatician within our data management team. The team supports Swedish life science researchers with data management according to the principles of open science and FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable). The appointed person will primarily provide support to medical and clinical research and will also be affiliated with the NBIS bioinformatics team for medical and health care research.

Responsibilities

We are looking for you who want to enable life science research in Sweden at a level beyond what is achievable for individual researchers, a single university, or a single research field. You will contribute to national research projects where the management of genomics, transcriptomics, and spatial proteomics data is a key component. A major focus will be on implementing routines for user support to researchers regarding the management and accessibility of human genetic data. A significant part of the role also involves training researchers in bioinformatics and research data management in Sweden.

Qualifications

Successful candidates must meet the following requirements:

  • PhD in one of the following areas: bioinformatics, molecular medicine, or a closely related field deemed relevant by the employer for the position.
  • Postdoctoral experience working with human omics data.
  • Extensive experience (at least 10 years) working with bioinformatics data, including experience analyzing bulk and single-cell transcriptomics data, spatial proteomics data, as well as Illumina and Nanopore whole-genome, methylation, and RNA-seq sequencing data.
  • Documented experience (at least 5 years) working with inflammatory and infectious diseases.
  • Experience (at least 5 years) independently driving support projects at an internationally competitive level.
  • Experience (at least 5 years) working within a national infrastructure for bioinformatics support.
  • Proficiency in a scripting language such as R or Python, and the ability to work efficiently in a Linux command-line environment and on large-scale computer clusters.
  • Very good communication skills in English, both oral and written, and the ability to communicate with researchers from diverse backgrounds.
  • Strong experience in collaborating and working in a service-oriented organization.
  • Experience in teaching.
  • A willingness to learn new methods and the ability to develop new skills.

Consideration will also be given to good teamwork skills, drive, independence, personal maturity, and how well the candidate's experience and skills complement and strengthen NBIS operations.

Desirable/Additional Merits

  • Experience with international repositories for the deposition and publication of Life Science data is desirable.
  • Extensive experience working with advanced bioinformatics analyses, including preprocessing and statistical analyses, selection and visualization, and genetic association studies, is a strong asset.
  • Knowledge transfer is an important concept for us, and experience as a supervisor is highly desirable.
  • Experience working with autoimmune diseases is further desirable.
  • "Reproducible research" and "FAIR data" are central concepts for us, and experience with relevant tools and methods is desirable.

About the Position

The position is fixed-term, a substitute position for 7 months with the possibility of extension. The position is full-time. Start date: 2026-08-17 or as agreed. Location: Uppsala.
